Error 814 - ethernet gone!!
I have a friend who has a 7 month old Compaq running Vista Home that was working fine until about 2 days ago. She is getting an Error 814 now every time she tries to connect to the intenet (via Cable modem). I looked at the Device Manager and there is no ethernet listed at all. This box has an integrated ethernet unit and the light is on when the cable is plugged in. When I unplug the cable, the system gives me no indication or when I plug it back in.Has anyone else had this problem??? I have downloaded a driver from HP and will be attempting to install it tomorrow. I also plan on taking my laptop and a new ethernet cable to rule out a connectivity problem. Is it possible that the integrated ethernet has gone bad and if so how do I test it??Any help would be appreciated!!Thanks,WendyError 814: The underlying Ethernet connectivity required for the broaband connection was not found. Please install and enable the Ethernet adapter on your computer via the Network Connections folder before attempting this connection.

Hello Wendy, Thank you for posting and sorry for the reply delay! Based on my experience, some similar problems are caused by NIC driver corrupt or missing. Please reinstall the updated driver for your network adapter by visiting the manufacturers website. Please let us know the result if possible. Thanks for your cooperation! You will need a fully functioning system or a friend that would get the driver for you. You may get lucky and it could be on the disks that came with your system. I had to get the driver on my laptop and then reload it using a jump drive. Hope this helps!!Wendy

You should always have a copy of your drivers on a CD... Or you can go to a friend's house or to the closest library or intrenet caf...

this is only done when there are some possibilities if windows might have copied the drivers as ghost entry in the registry hey please check if this works Add/Remove Hardware>Add/Troubleshoot a device>Add a new device, select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list"Click Network adapters>Network adapters>Manufacturers>Microsoft>Network Adapter>Microsoft Loopback Adapter. Note: After the adapter is installed successfully, you can configure its options manually,as with any other adapter.Note that if the TCP/IP properties are configured to use DHCP (the default), the adapter will eventually use an autonet address (169.254.x.x/16)because it is not actually connected to any physical media. *NOTE* if the options you are getting are not matching the details which i have provided then you`ll have to find out the drivers of your own either from internet or ..... always welcome Sanjay

Great. How to you reinstall from a manufacturer's website if you can't get onto the Internet? I'm having the exact same problem with Windows Vista after running the install disk that came with my computer.
