Error 1402 - Cannot install software
I also have a problem with error 1402. I installed Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on my Vista computer and now I cannot install Brother PE Design 8 (which is my most important programme). It is compatible with Windows 7 (and I have installed it on my Windows 7 laptop). How can I fix the registry entries. Hi Miya, the program was installed on my computer, when I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium. However, I got an error message about thread charts and I decided to uninstall/ reinstall it after upgrading. I was told that I did not have permission to uninstall the programme and I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall it (biggest mistake I ever made). The problem is, that I cannot even run the installation disk. However, I managed to download the disk in Safe Mode from the D-drive and I can therefore click on Setup. After I upgraded to Windows 7 my UAC settings changed. There should have been only one Administrator (me), a guest account and there is now an ASP.NET Machine account. When I click on Properties, Security, I get a few settings: e.g. one with my name, administrators, a system one and some just with long ID numbers. I have tried to add another Administrator account and run the programme with the Firewall disabled, but nothing works. The programme installed on my Windows 7 laptop without problems. One does not need a license number to install it, the programme is controlled by a security card reader and cannot be run without it. However, I can't even get it installed.

Hi Miya, I wanted to add that I looked at KB913188, but it is for street maps and also not for Windows 7. Is there a later version (I could not find it). Thanks for your help. Regards Confuseduser

Hi, Thanks for the post! According to the log you provided, you don’t have sufficient access to the program. Please check the Security setting about this program. Right-click this program – Properties – Security Tab, do you find your user account under the “Group or user names”? Click your user account, check the permissions bellowing, does it have full control of this program? If not, please check the “Full control” box through “Edit”. Then reboot to see if it works. If it doesn’t work, please turn off the firewall and UAC to see if the issue persists. If solutions above doesn’t resolve the problems, you can refer to this KB 913188 to check the registry permission. Also contact the Brother PE Design support to check if there’s any permission change if you install the program again, make sure the key is still useful. Hi The KB I provided shows a similar situation when cannot install a software. Please input regeidt in the search bar, could you find the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LayoutEditing.pesfile\shell\Open\command ? Comparing with the key listed in the KB, (although it’s a different software) and delete the key. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. After delete the key, you can take the ownership of the file and start to install. Refer to: Take ownership of a file or folder. Please feel free to give me any update. Hi Miya, I went to the Registry and I managed to delete one line "Layout and Editing". However, underneath there is LayoutEditing.pesfile and underneath the word shell. When I click on either I get sometimes that Access is denied and in case of the shell: "shell cannot be opened. An error is preventing this key from being opened. Access is denied." Would you be able to tell me, how to override this. I clicked on permissions on there is full permission for the two users listed. I could not change it to an owner, it would not let me, but I deleted the "inherited" bits. You have helped a lot so far. Thanks Helgaconfuseduser

Hi Miya, below is the last line that is left. The word "shell' underneath seems to have disappeared. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LayoutEditing.pesfile (Expanded: Default, Reg SZ, value not set). I have meanwhile been able to become the owner, but nothing helps. It just cannot be delted. Confuseduserconfuseduser

Hi Miya, I have followed everything, but I always get the message that there is an error and it cannot be deleted. I really do not know what to do next, apart from reinstalling Windows 7. As it is an Upgrade to Vista, I probably cannot do a clean reinstall either. Confuseduserconfuseduser

Right-click the key – Permissions – check the full control for your user account. Also take the ownership of your installation file and try to install it again. Hi Miya, thanks for your reply. In the Registry there is one line: LayoutEditing.pesfile. I have taken ownership, etc., however, I always get message that there is an error and the entry cannot be delted. As long as this entry is there, I cannot install the software. Confuseduser.confuseduser

Hi Miya, I have all the permissions (apart from special ones). I have also found out that I am logged in as Administrator. Nothing makes any difference. I still get same error message (1402), when I try to run the programme. The entry in the Registry just cannot be deleted. I have also changed the owner, etc.. As long as this entry is there, I cannot install my programme. Without this programme, this computer is absolutely no good to me. What else could I try. Confuseduser P.S. I think the Windows 7 Upgrade upset all the user data.confuseduser

Hi Miya, you have pointed me in the right direction. I managed to eliminate the entries from the registry (I did a lot of clicking and I modified the key). I now was able to install my program. Thank you very much. You were the only person, whose advice actually worked. Confuseduserconfuseduser

Dear Miya, I have encountered a similar issue trying to uninstall, modify, or re-install Adobe Acrobat extended, that is, I receive an Error 1402 message: Could not open key: Unknown\components\.... Using Windows 7, I have Administrator privileges and disabled UAC. Have tried deleting the registry key, but to no avail - will not grant access. I am not a tech expert, but suspect that it is simply corrupted (null key?). But I am guessing. Looking for help Puregedanken
