I'm getting the following error when attempting to install anything on my Windows 7 Pro system: Error 1352. 'username' is not a valid short file name. Username = my username. I've combed the Interwebs and found everything there is to know about this error and nothing that's been suggested seems to fix it. I have figured out that the MSI is attempting to create temp files in my home directory (benradlinski) and it's not able to do that for some unknown reason. I can open the directory via my "personal" folder, so it's not a question of access.I have folder redirection set up through a GPO on our network so "Documents" "Pictures" etc. are all pointed to each users home share.I have Admin rights to the system.I turned UAC off, just to be sure and I'm still unable to install anything.I tried logging in using one of our Admin accounts and I do NOT get the error there.I'm at my wits end.Has anyone else seen this?

Update: I went into HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders and changed "Personal" from our network share to "%USERPROFILE%\Documents" and it fixed the problem. However, this really isn't a solution and has never been a problem before (Vista, XP). Any thoughts?

Just a thought, as the issue can be fixed after change the location path back, please check if we have full permission to read from and write to the network sharing location. Meanwhile, as "one of admin accounts" work fine, please let me know if the "Personal" key is also changed to network share.

I confirmed that I have full control (r/w/m) rights to my home share. When I login using the admin account, it does change the Personal key to a network share, however the share doesn't exist (since it's an Admin account and we typically don't create a home directory for the Admin account). I figure I'll just deny the Folder Redirection GPO from being applied to my user account until I can figure something out.

New development:I discovered that my redirected "My Documents" folder (which is pointing at my home share) was showing as "offline", but I was unable to make any changes to the offline settings due to our GPOs. So I denied all folder redirection related GPOs to myself. I logged back in and presto, the error 1352 returns (when I attempt to install anything on my pc).I checked the registry and "Personal" is still pointed at "%USERPROFILE%\Documents".I've confirmed that I have rights to all the shares in question.I realize there are a lot of factors in play here, but this is very frustrating.

Hi, At current situation, I suggest that let's try disable all GPOs first. The issue should not occur in this situation. Then let's add GPO one at a time to find out which GPO causes such an issue.
