I have a vista laptop that I want to network with my xp desktop. I can share printer. Desktop can see shared files on laptop. Vista network map shows desktop compjuter but not as a part of network. Attempts to connect to desktop from laptop fail with 0x8007005 error. Diagnosis says desktop computer name may be mispelled. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Firstly, may I know if the Windows Vista could connect to the Windows XP before? Regarding the error code of 0x8007005, I suspect that there is a typo and should be 0x80070005 which means Access is denied. As the Windows Vista computer can be accessed by the Windows XP computer, but the Windows XP computer cannot be accessed by Windows Vista, its more likely due to some configurations on the Windows XP side. I would like to provide the following suggestions: 1. Let's check the basic networking and security settings first: a. Ping the Windows XP from the Windows Vista side using both IP Address and Computer Name. b. On the Windows XP computer, check both Sharing and Security settings, and make sure that you have assigned the Full-Control permissions to Everyone. Alternatively, you can disable the sharing of the target and then share it again with the default settings. c. Ensure you log on the Windows Vista with the Administrator account. d. The firewall on Windows XP is configured to allow the Files and Printer sharing. If the checks above have all passed, please continue the troubleshooting with the following steps: 2. This issue can also be resulted by the factor that some third party security software or firewall blocked the Windows XP being accessed. Lets perform a Clean Boot to check our issue. Clean boot on Windows XP ================ 1. Click "Start", click "Run", and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG" and click "OK". 2. Under the "Service" tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then click the "Disable All" button. In this way, we can disable all the services which belong to third-party programs. 3. Under the "Startup" tab, click the "Disable All" button. 4. Click "OK". 5. Choose "Yes" to restart the computer. 6. Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when Windows starts". NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please try to access the Windows XP computer from the Windows Vista computer again to see if it helps. If the problem still persists, please help collect the following information: 1. Are these computers in a domain or a workgroup environment? 2. If you have another computer on the network, please also check if the Windows XP desktop and the Windows Vista laptop can be accessed by this one, and let me know the results as well as the OS version on the third computer. Thanks!

Nick, You are correct about the typo. I was able to ping the xp via IP address and Name. However, going through the clean boot didn't help the situation. This is a workgroup environment and there are only two computers in the network, the xp (home edition) running sp3 plus daily updates, and the vista Home Premium.

Hi, Thank you for your response. Firstly, may I know if you have checked the permission settings of the share folder on the Windows XP computer? At this time, please try the following suggestions: 1. Install File and Print Sharing and make sure that it is not blocked by Windows Firewall. Step 1: Install File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks 1) Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK. 2) Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties. 3) Click the General tab, and then click Install. 4) Click Service, and then click Add. 5) In the Network Service list, click File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and then click OK. 6) Click Close. Step 2: Make sure that File and Printer Sharing is not blocked by Windows Firewall 1) Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then click OK. 2) On the General tab, make sure that the Don't allow exceptions check box is not selected. 3) Click the Exceptions tab. 4) On the Exceptions tab, make sure that the File and Printer Sharing check box is selected, and then click OK. 2. Reconfigure file sharing with the following Knowledge Bases. How to configure file sharing in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040 How to Set Up a Small Network with Windows XP Home Edition (PART 7: Sharing Folders) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814004/ In addition, if possible, I suggest enabling Netmon on the computer to capture the network packets. 1) Download NetMon3.2 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=f4db40af-1e08-4a21-a26b-ec2f4dc4190d&DisplayLang=en 2) Log onto the machines, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.2. 3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.2 window, click Create a new capture tab 4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. 5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon. 6) Try to re-produce the problem on the computer. 7) Go back to the NetMon window and press F11 to stop the NetMon. 8) Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file and send to me at nicolesli@hotmail.com If you have another computer, please also try to access the same share to see if it can work. Thanks!

Hi Nic, thanks first of all for your detailed help. However, I'm seeing the same error message (0x8007005) but all sharing and security options have been checked and double confirmed OK. The XP pc doesn't have a 3rd party firewall and anti-virus installed. Windows Firewall is not turned on as well. Other XP pcs can access it just fine (thus, there's no issue with file sharing configuration) but only my Vista laptop's having problem. Vista laptop is using Windows Firewall, but problem persists even after disabling it. The Network on Vista is set to "Private". Please help.
