Error 0x490 and recovering the data from corrupt partitions
Ok, so first, I did see this thread, but seeing as I have already reinstalled 7, I have a bit of a different problem. So first things first, what caused the initial BSOD which lead to the message 'Missing Operating System' (which is a new one, usually it's 'Operating System Not Found'): I was installing Paint.netand it crashed at some point during that. I was also downloading Adobe Photoshop CS4 Demo off their website through their official manner. Those two things, Zune and AVG Freewere the only things running. This was on my 64-bit version. What's happened since: So the thing restarted because I hadn't changed the setting because I hadn't BSODed yet and it wasn't at the forefront of my mind (because it totally normally is right?). Anyway, I tried to repair the OS's (I have both x86 and x64 installed on two separate partitions) and it did not work at all. Everything checked out except the boot sector. It gave the error code 0x490. Unfortunately my laptop isthe only computer accessable to me at the moment and my x86 install is disposable...all my files are on the x64 partition. I tried to to a System Restore using a restore point because I saw Paint.net creating a restore point before it installed (I thought was odd, but didn't hit cancel) but I was unable to access it because it seemed like my partitions (there were 2 plus about 5 GB unallocated) were corrupt or not recognized. When the repairs failed three times, I decided I would just sack the x86 install and re-install 7, which I did.To my surprise, the setup disk gave me the same EXACT partition sizes and 'formats' (unallocated, NTFS) as when I installed the two OS's on Monday rather than what I had changed them to since. I went with it (probably not the best idea) and took what it called 170GB of unallocated space and created a new partition. After re-installing 7 RCx64: So here I am with two 'partitions' that I cannot access and Windows wants to format. The problem here is that my documents (not too important since the semester just ended), my passwords (DigitalPersona has really screwed me over here), and my photos are all on one of those somethings. My music and the videos I care about are safe on my Zune, as are smaller versions of my pictures, but it'd be nice to have my documents and full size photos along with my passwords back. What can I do to recover this data? I've tried Pandora Recovery (fail), PC Inspector File Recovery (fail), and currently Recover Fix Demo for Windows.

Ok so If I'm reading this right, you still have the original partition and you didn't delete the partition just made another? If so Recovering your files is actually simple as their still ont he drive you just cant access them. All you need is a Knoppix v6 Linux Boot CD - This sounds odd but it works well for recovering files still on the hard drive while the OS is unrecoverable. After you load knoppix (Not install its a run from DVD) open the folder in the top left that reads Knoppix or open the file menu and open the local disk drive. It will show you a directory listing of all your files only in the windows style. From here you can attach your external hard drive or flash memory and copy over either the entire contents of the drive (Making them readable in another systems file table) or you can select just the files you want to copy aka documents pictures music... W7 stores this information under "Users" then your profile name.Keep in mind if you've been saving directly to the root of C:\ then your files will be under that and not users. http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/download.php?lang=en&link=ftp://ftp.cise.ufl.edu/pub/mirrors/knoppix/ http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html Make sure you download an English version, it's difficult if you cant speak Russian lol.
