Hi, Thank you for the post. Regarding the error code 815, I suggest contacting ISP to confirm if the username and password is correct. If the connection can be established by using other device/system, please create a new administrator account on the Windows Vista machine to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Click Start, type user account, and click the User Accounts control panel. 2. In the User Account control panel, click Manager another account. 3. Click Create a new account, type an account name, select Administrator, and then click Create Account. 4. Logoff and logon with the new account and establish the connection to check if the issue persists. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Dear Joson, My client is a real estate agent who is using Vista Home Premiumon his laptop (OEM installation). When he tries to connect to the cable modem in the office he is getting error code 815. When any of the other agents connect to the same modem they have NO problems ... they are running Windows XP on their laptops ... I have tried your solution listed above and it doesnot work either. Other suggestions? Thanks! HPMAustin

Hi everyone, I have also been going through the same issues with error 815 when trying to connect to the internet with the vista platform. However, I hope that my solution might work for you as well. After multiple hours on the phone with tech guys they suggested that my modem that I was worked just fine with my old computer that was running XP might be of issue. So we borrowed a friends newer modem and bing we were online. So check your modems they may need to be relaced with newer ones. Hope that helps. Shaun

I think it's not Vista problem. First, log in with administrator account andcheck whether you network adaptergets correct IP address from server. If it's not default 169.x.x.x thencreate VPN connection and try to connect. If it's not connecting then call your provider tech support.

Yes i got this very same error like everyone in this universe using vista....In my case i have a desktop running XP and i got a new lappie running vista.. So i what i used to do was to directly plug my Ethernet cord into my lappie from my PC. But since that was earlier connected to my xp machine , My modem was holding some configuration related win XP (I reckon).I tried diagnose and it recommended me to try and turn off and then turn on my modem. And that clicked !!!!Now i have no glitch in connecting to internet . But this was really frustrating first up when you cant set up an internet connection due to some crazy errorBye,Harish

anyone tried getting latest product drivers for modem, I had an 815 this evening, downloaded the driver from maufacturer website for vista installed the driver, connected the device AFTER, enterd credentials and wey hey!! were done. This seems to resolve any USB connection issues. Hope this helps some folks!! as for ethernet modems, makesure your PPP settings are okay, your VPI/VCI are correct your username and passwords are great. your modem has the latest firmware. if this fails try resetting your TCP/IP stack and flushing DNS and then maybe winsock reset. If they don't work try an alternate modem/router of a friend if possible. also when connecting you modem to another pc may sound silly but turn it off 1st otherwise the modem is still issuing an IP address to your old pc and cannot send correct packet data to your new one.

Actually the error message you encounter is that windows Vista automatically default your connection in broadband connection powered by a username and password (PPPoE). If your connection doesn't have username and password, all you need to do is disable it. 1. Go to Internet Explorer. click on Tools Tab and go to Internet Option. under Connections tab click on option Never dial a connection, then click on Apply. 2. If your using a PPPoE connection, input your username and password. If still persist, check your LAN status, setup and cables. Note: If you have a router you might need to input your username and password to your router and make sure to follow again the number 1 instruction.

Thank you so much Badasskick I was having the same issue as everyone else, though i'd already been using the internet minutes before, did something else came back and got this error, i search this answer on my partners computer which was hooked up to the same router, so i knew there was no issue there, tried out Badasskick's solution, and it worked a treat, for some reason my IE had decided to change its settings, not sure what i did to make that happen, but so glad its resolved. I use Vista btw, my partners is XP.
