Entrust Encryption BREAKS Windows 8 Update and Defender

Programs having issues

  • Entrust Entelligence Security Provider 9.2 for Outlook
  • Entrust Entelligence Security Provider 9.2 for Windows
  • Entrust Entelligence Security Provider Compatibility Kit

Steps to recreate issue.

  1. Load Windows 8 - 64-bit
  2. Install Office 2010 Professional Plus - 64-bit
  3. Install Visio 2010 - 64-bit
  4. Run Windows Update - Install all fix/patches.
  5. Ran sfc /scannow- Everything looks good.
  6. Install Entrust
  7. Reboot
  8. Run sfc /scannow - Shows unrecoverable issues.
  9. Run Windows Update - Error 80096002
  10. Run Windows Defender - Error 0xc000000d

So I'm not sure if this is a custom installer or what the problem is.

It is a compatibility issue, I suggest report this issue to the manufacturer while this forum is being monitor by Windows Team and they will try to look into this.

Found that if I uninstall "Entrust Entelligence Security Provider 9.2 for Windows" the problem will go away.

Plan to contact the vendor for further evaluation.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with the problem.

Thanks Cyber_Defend_Team for the suggestion.

Talked with Support, they believe that testing Windows 8 is currently in their QA.

After testing I was able to trace the problems caused by installing "Entrust Entelligence Security Provider 9.2" for Windows down to a set of registry keys.  By adding and removing these keys on a fresh Windows 8 VM without entrust, the many issues we were experiencing with Windows 8 could be reproduced and then fixed by removing the same keys (windows update, windows defender, windows troubleshooting, etc...).  So far everything appears to be working after installing Entrust in Windows 8, removing these keys, and then rebooting the machine:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\OID\EncodingType 0\CryptDllFindOIDInfo\2.16.840.1.101.3.4.2.1!1]
"Name"="SHA-256"
"Algid"=dword:0000800c
"Flags"=dword:00000001

Entrust ESP 9.2 does not currently support Windows 8.  Windows 8 support is slated for later this year.

That kind of sucks for the many users that have switched to Windows 8.

Why does it taking a year to provide Windows 8 support?

Is there that many changes to the underline architecture; Or does the Registry Tweak by Wallys2002 present a real problem?

Especially since those tweaks causes Windows App updates to fail.

Kyle Hagerman, do you need any beta testers?

Can you provide a more specific timeframe? Q2? Q3? Q4? We have several users on your software and it effectively delays any significant push towards using Windows 8 for our organization.

This issue is actually happening on Windows 7 devices as well with Entrust 9.1 or 9.2.

Like the previous users have said, if the ESP client is removed, Windows Updates is fine. As soon as ESP is reinstalled and the PC is rebooted.....Windows updates breaks again.

I have the same issue affecting one of my Windows 7 workstations.  The registry key workaround does fix Windows Update without having to uninstall Entrust 9.2.  Looking forward to an official patch from Entrust.

Hi everyone,

The ESPW is also causing problems with Windows 8.1.  It's killing the Apps Store, when logging on with another account.  The all the Apps Store Icon, have an X on them.  Which also kills the sysprep. Entrust actually have a fix available on their site  "eespwin64_92_sp1_173447.msp".

Also available for the ESPO "eespfmso64_9.1_184940.msp"

This fix is no longer required. This was addressed last year. Patching up ESP 9.2 SP1 to the latest patch will resolve the issue.

This has long since been resolved. Patch up to ESP 9.2 SP1 and the latest available patch and you will not see the issue.
