Hi Cat,I believe that out of the box the echo service is not installed on a windows 7 computer.( so, it make no sense to disable it :) )You can install this if you go inyour control panel to "Programs and Features."And then in the left pane click on the link "turn windows features on or off ".Check the "simple TCPIP services(i.e. echo, daytime etc)" option.Kind RegardsDFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER

Hi Daft thanks for your reply,i completely understand what u saying man,i know how to turn that feature on,but one thing i cant understand is how i get Echo requests(in received part when i type netstat -s) or echo pings if i have that service disabled? i mean its been long time it dont occurr anymore (changed the access point network) but i tried to switch back to the old one just for curiosity to see if it stills receives and bang received that S*#%,why do i get that? any suggestions or explanation?whati surely know is thats provinientfrom attacks, and one thing i would like to share is that those Kids i mentioned in my old posts(hkrs) they do know ppl who work where the modem is built up(usb modem 3g thingy) and my modem came on my hands already modfied, thus netbios is always activated even if i disable, it enables automatically when i connect,it just resets at every connection, lmhosts is enabled and i cant disable it cause its greyd color, and also when i go through the modem options i cant uncheck LCP extensions the same thing happens when i uncheck it after i connect it checks again so that really sucks,i wish i can have some support on this,of course i made lots of changes to minimize its effects, unbinded netbt and made lots of reg implementations and many many other things that i could spend a day posting it of so much changes...what i realized is that when my modem goes idle(its not checked the option"let the computer shutdown bla bla bla") the LCP extension takes action and receives echo requests when modem comes back form idle state ,at least thats what i figure i 've been trying to read about it but sometimes i dont understand 100% what experts are trying to say!!!will be waiting for other repliesKind regards,RR

Sorry Kat,Itought you where talking about the "echo service" (RFC862 - http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc862.html).But youare talking about the ICMP protocol (the ping command uses this protocol). The only way i know is to disable it in the windows firewall. But i will look tomorow into this. Now it is time to sleep :pKind RegardsDFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER

Hey Daft NP its my fault, sometimes im not clear enuff in terms of details thats the price i pay for trying to write a book in 3 lines lol...anyways and yeah i was referring to icmp echo requests,i already removed from system32 ping.exe,pathping.exe rpcping.exe,icmp.dll and other utilities which i dont use and never will(hopefully hehe but actually backed em up in my usb stick),and IMO i've used every blocking rule for icmp echo requests/reply even blocked echo ports such as 7 and dont remember the other one ,actually blocked every unused port as possible based on IANA records and icmp as well from 5-1024 port(of course the ports the system neeeds to comunicate like 500 is not included) and 1024-65535(all) now i dont know if via command line netsh can block it ...but i still get echo ping in that ocasion mentioned above, i guess it might be some modification this modem has made that is allowing echo requests or it could be the modem lcp extension is messing up with that skit that for shizzle....so any help is welcome and Gud nite Daft ,sleep well :DKind regards,RR

Hi Kat,If you remove the tools like ping.exe, pathping.exe, won't preventthat your computer recieve/send ICMP packets. You need to block ICMP traficwith the windows firewall (or an other 3rd party firewall.).If you still recieveecho's and you want to know where those echo'scomming from.Install the Windows Network Monitor and snif your network for icmp traffic. This will tell youwho is sending you the ICMP packets.P.S.: You don't need mark every post from me as answered.Only the post that solves your problem is fine. :)Kind RegardsDFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER

Hey buddy daft, yeah dude thats what i figured, yesterday i opened 2 threads about those tools, really need a packet sniffer so bad,but the only problem is i cant download it cause its .exe and even though i removed temporarily *.exe from GPO ristrictions it stills get blocked,i guess some left over may still remain in windows registry somewhere hidden, wish you or someone reliable could upload a .zip file then i download and install, also dont know names of packet analyzers for windows =/any help is welcome and thanks again for replying tho!!Kind regards,RR

Google WireShark. It is an open source analyzer and it is free.
