EFS on large files
Using an auto generated (not PKI issued) EFS certificate to encrypt the "Documents" folder on Windows 7 machine. Within the "Documents" folder are several very large (>1Gig) files. When these large files are encrypted a TMP file is being left behind (not cleaned up). The TMP file(s) are named EFS0.TMP, EFS1.TMP, etc.. Futhermore, the TMP files are "System" & "Hidden", and permissions need to be assigned before the file can be deleted. Has anyone else seen this issue? Is there a fix? Thank you, PaulT15

Hi, When EFS encrypts a file, EFS creates a backup copy of the file, and this file is named EFS0.tmp. EFS does this to prevent accidental data loss during the file encryption process. After the encryption process is complete, the backup copy is deleted. If the file is not deleted automatically, I suggest you edit the permission list for that folder. If it does not work, please take the ownership of the folder. Hope it helps. Alex, Thanks for the reply. The issue seems to be that after the encryption process is complete, the backup copies (EFS0.tmp, EFS1.tmp, etc.) are not being deleted; but only on large files. Furthermore, I cannot readily reproduce this on ALL Windows 7 machines. Some Windows 7 machines I can easily reproduce, other's the issue doesn't exist. As you mention, if the EFSx.tmp file is not deleted when the encryption process is complete, my only recourse is to edit the permissions granting myself the ability to delete the file. If anyone else if having this problem please let me know. Not sure if it's maybe resource related or bug related and perhaps the reason I can reproduce on some and not others is because of the lack of a specific file/version of a file. Thanks! Paul
