EFS: Encrypt contents to secure data greyed out
Hello,I'm somehow stuck here:Vista Ultimate 64 bit SP2 (no domain), all disks are NTFS formated. Item [ ] Encrypt contents to secure data is greyed out in advanced file attributes.I even deleted all my personal certificates and re-created EFS one using cipher /k - same behavior. No error messages in eventlog.tried from commandline: \>cipher /e d:\test.txtEncrypting files in d:\test.txt [ERR]test.txt: The file system does not support encryption.0 file(s) [or directorie(s)] within 1 directorie(s) were encrypted. What the heck could prevent EFS from running? I tried it under (runas) different userwhich never used EFS before - Vista created EFS cer right away, asked for backing it up ... but failed to encrypt anythingHopefully I don't use EFS for work so this behavior doesn't hurt so much, it just makes me feel pretty lame :(Checked related services, group policy etc etc. There's Win7 RTM installed on the same machine, could this (some writing onto Vista drives from Win7) make EFS fail?ThanksMP

Hi, Thank you for posting. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. If the following key exists in Windows Vista, please just remove it: Note: Please perform a full-system back up first. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\EFS\ Name: EfsConfiguration Type: REG_DWORD Value: 0x01 Then, reboot the computer and see how it works. 2. If the issue persists, please also run the following command in an elevated command prompt: fsutil behavior set disableencryption 0 After this, please reboot the computer again. Then, check if the item Encrypt contents to secure can be selected and you can encrypt the file. Meanwhile, I would like to share the following with you: Cipher http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771346(WS.10).aspx Hope this helps. Thanks.
