Duplicate files with (1) in the name
After a bunch of starts and stops I finally got my old files tranferred to my new windows 7 computer. Unfortunately with all those starts and stops I wound up with a lot of duplicate files. The ones that were called "copy of.." were easy to find and delete. There remain a bunch with (1) in the file name. If I try to search for all files with (1) I get all files with 1 in the name which is not what I want. How do I get rid of all the (1) files?

I would do it from a command prompt. Open a Command Prompt cd\ dir "*(1)*" /s > output.txt notepad output.txt That should show you all files on your hard drive that have a (1) in the name. Rich Why can't I be different and original like everybody else? - Vivian Stanshal

The reason I want to find them is to delete them, not to edit teir names in notepad. It also doesn't help because the files are in multiple folers. The idea is that I want to save time by making the OS find all the files for me across multiple directories so I can group then together and delete them all at once. There should be a way to construct the search so that only files that have (1) in the name are returned, not all files that have 1 in the file name.

Hello, file:"*(1).*" Use quotation marks in the search. This will list all of the files that have the (1) in their name followed by the . . After the list shows click on any file the do Ctrl A and all of the files will be highlighted. Now hold the shift key and the del ete key. You will be prompted with a quesstion of if you would like to permanently delete the files. Choosing yes will delete them all. They will not be going into your Recycle Bin . One caution: Files that sometimes are not downloaded properly will create a file with no size ( 0kb ). Re-downloading that file will cause the file to be named with the (1) in it's file name. In this case the file will actually be the good file (a file you may want to keep. Consider this before deleting all of the files. JB
