That's the dump reporting tool and it runs when some program/process causes an error in the system. So you need to find out what the root error is and fix it. Since you've told us nothing about your computer and its recent history, here is general information about troubleshooting a slow computer:Some reasons for computer slowness:1. Computer hasn't been maintained - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Maintenance 2. Computer is infected with malware - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware 3. Hard drive is too full. Remove unnecessary stuff, uninstall unused programs. Don't forget to back up!http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Backing_Up4. Flaky third-party software. Toolbars and add-ons are particular culprits in this area. Uninstall toolbars (Google, Yahoo, ISP-branded, etc.) and look carefully at what add-ons are in use in your browser(s).5. Computer has too many unnecessary programs/processes running in the background. Manage your Startup:For XP - How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310560 The free Autoruns program is very useful for managing your Startup - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx For Vista/Windows7 - Start Orb>Search box>type: msconfig and when it appears in the Results box above, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".Autoruns is also very useful.6. User is running a bloated/invasive antivirus program such as ones from Norton and McAfee. Replace with a better program. I recommend either NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free). Avira is also good but the free version has an unpleasant nag screen (Google for instructions as to how to disable this). User may also be running more than one real-time antivirus/firewall/security program.7. User has installed new programs that are processor and/or memory-intensive (Photoshop, AutoCAD, Mathmatica or the like) and doesn't have the necessary hardware power.8. Hard drive is failing and is in PIO Mode (IDE drives only - not applicable to SATA drives). This is very dramatically slow (like being back in 1985). See Hans-Georg Michna's information here -http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10 If the PIO registry fix doesn't "stick" (or you have a SATA drive), the hard drive is probably failing and should be tested.http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_TshootIn addition to the above, also see http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/help-my-computer-is-slow.html MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

The problem is not the PC it's the software dumprep that hangs the system. Get rid of it. It is not doing ME any good! It hangs my system until I terminate it.

No, you've misunderstood what is going on with the original poster's computer. And you've misunderstood the function of dumprep.exe. Once again, dumprep.exe is the reporting tool. It is reporting a problem. There are a lot of problems going on with the OP's computer and s/he needs to solve the problems. Then dumprep.exe will not show up. Dumprep.exe itself is not the cause of the OP's computer being slow; the problems are.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I am not the original poster, but I do have the same problem. It is altogether possible that my computer is not running efficiently and that I have to do a really good cleanup but unfortunately, not today. The slowdown that is bugging me the most, though, is when 2 copies of dumprep are running simultaneously, using 99% of cpu (according to task manager). If I don't need them, I promise that if I remove them I will still get around to tuning my pc to avoid future problems. However, microsoft suggests 2 different removal tactics for dumprep -- one using msconfig and getting it out of startup (I already have it disabled in startup) and changing the registry entry underHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (it's not there either) so where is it coming from? thanks.

Clean up your computer and it will go away. Fix the problems and the problem-reporting-mechanism will not appear. See my reply to the OP with general troubleshooting steps to follow.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

dumprep.ex never runs infinitely. It runs for some time after an eroor and then terminates (in abt 2 min max). And it never reappears ultil an errror occurs again so u should not get it at every boot.Vibhor Agarwal

Guess Again.... Not only can it "Hang" but it can also start MULTIPLE times with NONE finishing!!! I don't care about the report or what caused it. I JUST WANT THE "DUMPREP.EXE" to be BLOCKED or STOPPEED BEFORE IT CAN HANG.How can we STOP OR BLOCK this program??Email removed for privacy

as i said dumprep.exe doenst keep running, it runs to prepare a report and then terminates. If on ur PC it runs infinitely then either u have got a lot of application crashes in the background or ur Pc is infected.Vibhor Agarwal

to clean all the infection try Dr Web CureIt Scanner. Demand based scanner, portable, no system changes , no installation, no need to remove ur antivirus.Scan again with an anitmalware such as IOBit Security 360Vibhor Agarwal

I agree with the people with this problem. No matter what I do it keeps running at startup. I can't get rid of it. No Malware, no Virus. Its a constant problem now. I used to be able to turn it off and it never came back, now its back and I CAN't get rid of it. If its reporting, then let me stop it from reporting. I only have 5 things in my startup. THATS IT !!!!NvMcTrayeguiNvCpldumprep 0 -k Command = %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k Location = HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runctfmon I am so tired of this. AND YES it Always slows down my computer. I have tried some of the things online to get rid of this, but lately its back and now theres nothing I can do about it. Maybe there's a service that can shut this down? I take the check out, restart, and its back before I do anything. I agree that I may be pushing my system. Its a Dell Dimension 8200 running XP Home (Always Updated) 2 gigs of rambus, two hard drives with total of 1.25 tb and 70% free space. I plan on replacing it sometime in summer '11 and use it for a music server. The problem is, its still on even if I have a new Windows 7 machine. I have never had a virus & using Eset Smart Security/Nod32... RUNS FLAWLESS, good choice for everyone else who've had Antivirus software that YES... definitely slowed you down (Been there done that, Norton). Unless you've never had this happen, then I guess its not a problem for anyone. I do have some memory intensive programs like CS3 etc, but still, take this dump out of the startup... I can take the consequences if I take it out of my startup menu. Just, someone, explain how we can do this.

Ok Help is here... I downloaded CC Cleaner. Ran it... and dumprep is GONE. CC Cleaner is Freeware. In Tools, Run startup... Uncheck it and you're good to go. For everyone that says I haven't solved the reason why its on, well, until then, I won't be having any problems. CC CLEANER WORKS... Thank you.
