Drive Icons are messed up / corrupt on Medium settings
Hi all,I think I have exhausted most of my options and am looking for a solution I havent been able to find yet. When I open up MyComputer the drive icons are the wrong images for the my secondary and a external drive if the icons are set to medium size. If I change to large they are fine. If I change to small the secondary/external are fine but the C drive is now wrong. It looks like a win3.1 icon with the top right corner folded over see images at http://www.kayabound.com/incoming/icon1.JPGhttp://www.kayabound.com/incoming/icon2.JPGI have tried a few registry changes, all are reverted back now though. If I run scandisk/error checking the drive icon will appear for a short bit but it seems a reboot or some otherwise undiscovered trigger sends it back to the way it is.If I use large icons all is fine except in explorer view where the icons are smaller is always bad... the two images show better than I can describe.I dont see a way to run a repair on win7 without me having to do a lot of setup and stuff afterwards so I would like to avoid this if I can. I am assuming this is a registry issue, but for the life of me I can track down where and which one. Thanks for helping!!

You second link is bad.If you are talking about the WD icon, it is caused by an entry in the hidden system file autorun.inf in the root of the M: drive.

Sorry I should have been clearer. On the first image the left hand navigayion pane shows the error image I am dealing with, the main icons are large in the main pane and therefore work. If I made the icons *D and H drives* in that view medium they would look like the navigation pane errors. The WD and Element drive were just there for backups but not part of the issue. I honestly didnt check them in medium icon size so I am not sure if they would exhibit the same behavior. D and H are the drives always here and connected and the ones I am trying to fix.The second image is fixed, too so that should illustrate better... I hope.

1. Set Folder Options to Show hidden files, folders, and drives.2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to: C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local 3. Right click on the IconCache.db file and click on Delete4. Click on Yes to confirm5. The IconCache.db file has now been deleted.6. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to rebuild the icon cache.NOTE: This rebuilds and recreates a new IconCache.db file.7. Set Folder Options to Don't Show hidden files, folders, and drives. Before trying cdobbs' suggestion, you can first try to perform a System Restore to restore the system to the date before the issue first occurred. If the issue persists after reloading the icon cache as cdobbs suggested, please right click on the problematic hard drive icon, click Properties, on Customize tab, click "Restore Default" button and then click OK. Also, please refer to this thread for more troubleshooting suggestions: Where is the drive icon setting. Besides, you can use third party software to change the default icon back. Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. Hope this helps. Regards, Linda

Ok I tried:The IconCache.db with no luck. The "Restore" option in Customize for the drive letters doesnt make any difference. The icon drive changer software doesnt work using it to restore to default either. I can change it to something else but not default. When I use the registry setting at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Applications\Explorer.exe\Drives... I can force the culprits to an icon in C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll,30 and make the D and H drives show up properly in medium/large icons but when I go to small it messes up again. I have tried a number of registry entry adjustments I found in other threads but this one was the only one that gave me patial success. I shouldnt have to reset all teh bad icons by giving them a direct path though and it bugs me that C is only messing up when its a "small" version.http://www.kayabound.com/incoming/icon3.JPGAlso I noticed if I go to Control Panel in Category format there are more errorshttp://www.kayabound.com/incoming/icon4.JPGIf I change that to Large icons in Control Panel you can see other errored icons.http://www.kayabound.com/incoming/icon5.JPGAnother one is at http://www.kayabound.com/incoming/icon6.JPG and shows when you right click the desktop. See the bottom 3 icons.Obviously I have some other icon issues still going on and I am still trying to avoid reinstalling Windows or looking for someother way to make Windows repair bad files without redoing my entire installed suite of applications, settings and downloads. Thanks for all the suggestions, but apparently I am still missing a corrupted dll , cache file, or registry entry somewhere.Any more insight is appreciated.
