Dreamscene Gone in Windows 7 Beta
I recently installed Windows 7 on a PC that was running Ultimate x86. I have to say, Windows 7 Beta is a LOT better. But there's one problem that I have with it, I lost my dreamscenes. I no longer can set mpeg2 or wmv or .dream files as my background. I really liked that feature of ultimate. With that said everything else is great. I like how the editions are now set so that when you upgrade from a cheap edition to a more expensive one you get more features. I think it would also be good that when people with Vista Ultimate upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate that they don't lose any features. That's all I've got to say,Keep up the great work,-Beaver2

DreamScenes have been totally removed from Windows 7John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org

Why?

I think because the added slideshow ability is a good replacement. The images for slideshow are easier to accommodate high resolution screens when they become available, such as 4K that we might see soon, not to mention the 30" 2,500 pixel wide monitors. Who wants a relatively low resolution video playing on their desktop, or a high resolution one hogging processing time.

Beaver_2, I don't know what the official Microsoft line is on why it has been removed but from comments i've received from other users it hasn't been that much of a success. The videos were rather amateurish at the best of time. There is no way that Microsoft were going to compete with, say StarDock DeskScapes. Another comment that many users have expressed is that you don't really see the desktop that often to take advantage of a multimedia desktop background. Okay you see it when you first boot and, maybe, when you shut down, but after the initial boot up of you system you are busy opening other applications to see what is going on elsewhere.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org

aww... I never had window Vista but I tried Windows 7 and the very first thing I wanted to do was get dreamscenes on there... when I'm not working on my computer my desktop is showing and I really really wanted that, is there anyway to download maybie a vista program and run any kind of compatibility on it? lol that's actually one of the main reasons I wanted to go to the OS.

Lolindir - As John pointed out, Dreamscenes wasn't going to compete very well with Stardock's DeskScenes. (hint, hint) Dreamscenes is/was a Vista Ultimate Extra - one of the few that were made and were only available through Windows Update - so no, there's no way to download the files. And also, as John pointed out, they were kind of useless. You see them when you're booting up and shutting down, but most of the time it's all hidden behind the windows you're using - and they're sucking up resources ALL of the time.
