My son received as a gift a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 laptop, with pre-installed Windows 7 Starter Edition (according the My Computer Properties). I think he answered a kind of No to a security question (maybe related to Windows Firewall), because now he has an annoyng problem. He tries to make Windows Updates; number of important updates were already made, but the last 49 updates are in status of downloading; I'd say "perpetual downloading". For example now the system reports 49 important updates of 443 MB; from two days ago (more than 48 hours) were downloaded of this amount only 1%. So, I think the downloading is "working", but extremely slow. Some notes: Windows Updates are enabled and set as automatic. All other kind of downloading are working very well; for example, I downloaded Avast Personal Edition (53 MB) at 1.2 MB/sec, Adobe Acrobat Reader (45 MB) at 976 KB/sec, so there are no problems with my connection or downloading - generally speaking. My son tells me that at the beginning (6-7 days ago), when he received his gift, updates were downloading... reasonnably (as he can remember), he didn't notice anything strange. Now, I am a specialist in informatics (programming, using, trainings), I work in this area from more than 35 years ago. But I'm not a specialist in configuring operating systems like Windows 7. I tried to see settings under Windowsd Firewall which can imply such a behaviour: all downloading work fine, excepting downloading in Windows Updates. But... many of settings I don't understand (of this point of view I think Windows Vista and Windows 7 are "double-troublers". Too much security settings can be counter-productive). I even turned off the Windows Firewalls - with no effect (and then I turned them on). You realize I am angry with this situation. I've downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), which I use on my desktop and I am very satisfied of it; downloading the program was OK (somewhere at 1 MB/sec); but after installing, the first update was... not finished yet. So I've downloaded Avast Personal Edition, which updates automatically without any problem of downloading speed. I've uninstalled MSE. So, it seems that only downloadings for Windows Updates are in trouble (signatures for MSE are Windows Updates, too). Unfortunately, I don't know how to download updates offline and perform updating offline... Maybe - I hope so very much - there is someone which knows what happened to Windows Updates on my son's Dell Inspiron Mini 10. TIA, John

There is no registred errors on your system? You could try looking at Windows Event Viewer to see if you can get additional information about the problem. That info might help you find a solution. Can you post the last 40-50 lines of your update log? To do this, go to start then in the search box type windowsupdate.log the file will be at the top of the list. Open it, go to the bottom of the file and then copy the lines and post back here. This may help shed some more light on the problem.

I think I've made a mistake applying the suggestion in the article. I wish to repeat the try. If not succeeding, can that procedure damage the system?

OK. There is nothing wrong with you sent. Try to perform a retore operating on your son's PC (Use a restore point that is older than the date of the appearence of the problem. John have your son run windows update hisself, and select custom instead of auto. have him deselect all the updates and only select a few. see if he can do it that way. A fresh install of starter and take HOURS to download and install the updates, and if he is running a P2P and downloading the updates will slow down. MSE updates can be 70 meg so it will take some time and each tue patchs are released so he is behind and needs to catch up.

Oh ye, I've tried; but there is no difference. I concluded there is no problem of how many updates there is, but it's a problem of the checks Microsoft site or OS Windows 7 Starter is making. So, it doesn't matter if updates are on auto or not. If the system - on time of one work session - succeed to download (let's say) 2 or 3 updates, then by shutting down or restarting the system the user will be asked to allow performing the downloaded updates. If the user rejects performing of downloaded updates maybe these are downloaded again (is it so? I don't know); but if the user allows performing the updates, next he will have th 2 o3 updates less to count. By this way (letting updates set on and auto), I got performed 30 of the 49 updates in 2 days and a half. I told my son to follow the same attotude facing the updates. The problem will be for the updates of over - let's say - 20 MB, which will not be downloaded in a day session of work... I think that of unknown causes one ore more updates became corrupted; for example, rejecting performing of updates at shut down, something become corrupted and can't be checked on the next start (maybe - I'm not sure). MS Helper, is there a way you (or Microsoft) give me (us) an automated procedure which checks all updates and list the corrupted ones and then, if possible, remove these updates so they be rescheduled? Something like this... Of course, restoring the system from a restarting point (which could be already off) or re-installing the system are valid solutions, but I wish I can avoid this kind of solutions... John

Please temporary disable antivirus and firewall then confirm if the performance of update downloading is better. Do you have another Windows 7 computer? If so, please let us know if it works properly. Also, please let us know if Windows Update works properly if you take the problematic computer to another network.
