Download from Win 7 to Server 2008 R2 Network Share.... hangs
Hi. I've been running Windows 7 and Vista and XP on my home network/domain. I recently upgraded from Server 2003 to Server 2008 R2 (64-bit). After doing so, when i download a file from the internet, from any workstation, to a network share, the download is nearly immediate but then when it reaches 99%, it hangs for upwards of 30 - 40 seconds. For example, i can download Adobe Reader, a 32 meg file. Takes about 20 seconds to download. If i download to my local workstation, again, 20 seconds and it's done. However, if i download to a network share, 19 seconds in when the download reaches 99%, it hangs for another 30 plus seconds. This never happened under Server 2003 and i'm completely lost.Any suggestions?I was reading these articles about enabling the Firewall Inbound/Outbound rules on the server for BranchCache services, but that didn't resolve the issue. Please let me know what other information you might need and/or if this has been reported by anyone else. The one other thing I noticed after the upgrade...My wife and I both keep our PST files for Outlook 2007 in our home directory so that regardless of what machine we may log into, we have access to our email. Our PST's are in excess of 600 Megs. I personally have 5 PST's, she has 2.Outlook opens normally and functions normally but then for no apparent reason, it just freezes up/goes to NOT RESPONDING. I feel that this is related as again, this never happened under Server 2003.Lastly, i enabled ROAMING profiles under Server 2003 and logging off and logging into whichever workstation was very quick. Once i moved to Server 2008, and then enabled Roaming Profiles, i now have about a 3 minute wait as i shut down a workstation and close to a 3 minute wait when logging into a workstation. My Server is overkill with a Q6600 processor and 4 gigs of ram. My Workstations include one Q6700 processor with 4 gig's ram and the other's are all Dual Core 2 machines, each with 4 gig's also.I'm also on a wired ethernet GIGABIT network.Sadly, all i can say again is that under Server 2003... everything worked flawlessly.AND NOW... MY DISCLAIMER! :)I plead ignorance because even though i havefairly good equipment and network infrastructure,I am not a wiz at this stuff. I do it to learn and have fun. I am not an amateur, but i am far from an expert too.The main reason i have not gone over to Windows Home Server is first, it's 32 bit, second, i lose the ability for drive mappings, 3rd, i can't "log into it" like a domain, instead i log into local acct's which then log into the home server and 4th, i can't just put in a hard drive with data on it. It wants to wipe the drive, so i first have to make a backup and then manually transfer all that data over once the drive is installed. Also, i don't know the best configuration, meaning... use 2 80-gig drives for the OS partition and then 2 Large drives for data (one for data, one for mirror) or put in 2 very large drives and be done. I can't find that answer. Lastly, WIN Home Server is based on Server 2003 and next year Win Home Server V. 2 will be out. It will be 64 bit and i'm going on a limb and guessing that IT WILL BE based on Server 2008 technology. Anyhow... i detour. I only throw this out because many that i have told about my "hanging" issue, ask me why not just move to WIN Home Server... and i don't have enough answers yet.Sorry... back on topic, I have done multiple things to test... and nothing works, so far.For example, I did a CLEAN INSTALL of SERVER 2008 and several workstations (WIN 7 PRO). No effect. Ihave disabled the firewalls on workstations and server as well as turned off Windows Defender on workstations and server and that did not help. This issue occurred both before and AFTER installing Antivirus solution. I am NOT using raid on my server except for Mirroring which is on the primary OS drives only. Meaning, i have an 80 gig HD for the primary OS (which contains the HOME folder as well as the Roaming Profiles) folders. I then have a 2nd 80 gig identical HD for mirroring. Both are NTFS and both are BASIC drives.I then have 5 more HD's ranging from 320 GIG to 750 GIG in size. Half are BASIC and the other half DYNAMIC. ALL are NTFS and all are SATA drives.I have changed share permissions and file level security permissions to EVERYONE and FULL ACCESS and that did not resolve the isssue.I made one of my drives in the server a single partition and downloading to that drive made no difference. Otherwise, my drives each have between 3 and 5 partitions each and i Map to each using a basic NOTEPAD file with a .bat extension. I also found a book on how to write login scripts using VB format, i was successful in creating a script in NOTEPAD and then using the .VBS extension but that too, did not work. SO it's not the login script, as far as i can tell.My home directory is specified in the AD User & Computers and not the login, but that didn't seem to be a factor either. Still hangs if i download to my home directory, right at the end of the D/L.And lastly... i have checked the various event viewers/logs. DNS, AD, Event Viewer for Security, Applications, etc... and nothing is out of the ordinary. No errors other than my time server is set wrong. LOLA friend suggested that there mght be some kind of "security" setting in the firewall on the server, NEW to SERVER 2008 R2, which looks at the data that is downloaded from the internet from a workstation which is then to be stored on a HD within the server, differently than under Server 2003.That's what lead me to these forums and reading about the BranchCache... but enabling those inbound predefigned rules did not seem to help.Ok, that's all i have. Sorry for rambling... i'm just trying to be thorough.Any advise... would sure be appreciated.I'm now wondering if it's some kind of DRIVER issue on the server mainbaord... and whether i need to ugrade the board???Thanks in advance for any help anyone can throw my way!Sincerly,Terster

I'm pretty interested in the answer also, this seems to be similar to an issue I'm having..

there are two entries in the local security settings ( or in domain policies ) /local policies/security options/min session sec ntlm ssp based including rpc....uncheck both boxes insideI say this because i know they interfere with win7 on 2003 domain, and as you stated you have xp pc's on your domain the security maybe too high, or was. did u upgrade to 2008 or just fresh install?I think the issue is maybe the credentials checking as the file comes in....another suggestion....in earlier versions of server I found turning on or off the indexing service made a differenceand I agree with your drive mirror array, that's how i run too....I haven't found the cash for the update to server 2008 yet!so I keep running on 2003 for now ( home lab ) i know i could cheatit but I like to stay legal...lolhope the suggestions help

HI.Thanks, i'll check out the settings you suggested.I have only 1 XP laptop and it's rarely used. More of a backup if one of my primary laptops needs to be sent in for repair.I am currently on Server 2008 and i did a CLEAN fresh brand new install. Nothing migrated over.As mentioned, under Server 2003, i had no issues with any workstation/OS... Xp, Vista, Win 7. Thappened only after upgrading to Windows Server 2008.Some of the Win 7 pc's i migrated to the new domain and others i did a CLEAN INSTALL and then joined the new domain. I even changed the domain name when upgrading to Server 7 in case that was it. It was not.My primary issue again... is mostly seen when downloading anything from the internet (adobe reader, ms service packs, etc) from a workstion and downloading directly to one of my shares on the network.Rarely do i have an issue where i'm working on a large document which is stored on a network share and when i go to "save" it, it will hang for 30 seconds or so. Rare, but it does happen, (but agian, never ever under Server 2003).Any other idea's and or posts from others that share this issue on Server 2008, would sure be appreciated. It's nice to see that i'm now not the only one with this issue. I've done tons of Google searches and MS Technet searches and i'm just not finding anything.I did also adjust the sever firewal branchcache... and that did not help. Thanks!Terster!

Hi, May I know if other clients have this issue? Just as a test, please check if it is also slow if you copy a 32MB file to the server from the client. Please also collect the gpsvc.log and Winlogon.log on the 1. Please obtain detailed troubleshooting information of processing group policy log (gpsvc.log): 1) Click Start, type "Regedit" in the Start Search box, and press Enter. 2) In the Registry Editor, expand HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion 3) Under that, create a new Key called "Diagnostics" 4) Under that key, create a DWORD value "GPSvcDebugLevel" and set the value as 0x30002 (hexadecimal) 5) In Command Prompt, type "gpupdate /force" to refresh GPO. 6) After that, please collect gpsvc.log which is located in %systemroot%\Debug\Usermode 2. Please do as following steps on these problematic computer to enable "winlogon.log" as the delay occurs during computer startup: 1) Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) 2) Locate and click the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions\{827D319E-6EAC-11D2-A4EA-00C04F79F83A}. Please note: The above registry key is one path; it has been wrapped for readability. 3) Edit the following registry value: Value name: ExtensionDebugLevel Data type: DWORD Value data: 2 4) Quit Registry Editor 5) Reboot the computer The Winlogon.log file is created in the folder %systermroot% \Security\Logs, please upload them to Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) and sharetheirs URLs with us. Hi. Thanks for the reply. I will work on this, this coming weekend, i hope.I am able to copy from any of my workstations to the server without issue.I will however turn on logging, download files from IE on a workstation to the server, also copy/move files from workstation to server and upload the logs. Again, i'm small home user that likes the domain concept for security and drive mappings. I have my primary Server 2008 R2 64 machine, Quad Q6600 Desktop with 2 interchangeable HD's(Win 7 Pro 64 & Win XP 32 Pro, NOT DUAL BOOT),a laptop with Win XP 32, another laptopwith VU 64 (and a separate drive for Win 7 Pro 64) and lastly, one more laptop which has 3 interchangeable HD's (XP Pro 32, VU 64, Win 7 Ult 64).I have this "delay" issue on all OS's, from all Machines, and only AFTER upgrading via clean install, to Server 2008.Thanks
