Why am I getting download speed of a dialup modem? It is slow!!!! 20 hours to finish just 1/3 down. WHY!!!!

At the office my download speed was 250KB/sec and the download took 2.5 hours. At home my download speed was above 2 MB/sec and the download took less than 30 minutes. (No calculators please, I'm doing this from memory). :) My understanding is that on MSDN when you download from the Top Downloads section Akami is used to speed the delivery. To Carey's point there are many variables that affect your effective speed. Edit: Opps. This is described better in an earlier post. That's what I get for reading "in order".

I take it you're trying to download the Windows 7RC? In any case I think you answered your own question; a dial-up modem. What kind of download speeds are you getting? 4-10Kbps? I had dial-up for years and I always took about 1-5 minutes to download just 1Mb and if you are downloading the Windows 7RC that's around 3.5GB if I remember correctly (that's 3500 times more then 1 Mb) so at 4-10Kbps you're looking at 3500-14933 minutes or 59-248 hours! Sorry PNutts, I know you said no calculations but I couldn't resist hahaha

I am trying to download the 64 bit of Home premium. right down I am getting 24 kbs.

Hi,my download speed here is around 115kbps up to 205kbps depending on the server where im downloading it from....so no issue for me with win7 (Hspa dialup connection)Regards,RR

I downloaded the Pro version of Win 7. I got 650 kb/sec. On the Home Premium version, I am getting 30 kb/sec.

Oh now I get it, you have the download speeds OF a dial-up modem but you don't have dial-up. Maybe there's lots of people downloading it? Maybe it's on a slow server or the server is busy with everyone downloading the Windows 7 RC?

Dont know i think microsoft servers can handle lotta ppl downloading stuff but dont know when i said 115kbps/sec or 205 i meant the download speed rate or transfer rate not the overall thing...low speed could be many things so i cant be precise cause i dont really knowmuch details and what could be causing your download speed low,could be a third party soft limiting or could be socks problem...so dont know wait for the specialists on this forum and i hope you get ur stuff solved!kind regards,RR

It took 48 hours to download the Home Premium version 64-bit. I was getting between 13 and 48 kbs. I download the pro version. I was getting about 1200 kbs. Why the difference?

There was a problem with the server.
