Download 64bit version with 32bit key?
I will be attending a W7 launch event for IT/Developers, and I understand they give out a 32bit copy of W7 Ult. The problem is my developer machine has 8GB of RAM, so I would really need the 64bit. Is there a way to get a hold of the 64bit version using the 32bit key, and not have to wait till general release in Oct? (Unfortunately I don't have technet, etc - So I can't go that route.) Thanks very much.

Thanks very much. Basically in the same boat here... Just left the launch event and opened up the Win 7 package/envelope that was given out and was VERY disappointed to discover that they are only providing us with the 32bit version of Windows 7. IT/Developers are typically tech savvy folks running high end 64bit machines with lots of RAM. While I appreciate Microsoft's "gift" for attending their 4 hour launch event, it would have been really nice had they included both the 32bit & 64bit disks. The 32bit version is basically useless to me on my hardware. :-( Will the 32bit license key that I was given by Microsoft at the live launch event work with a 64bit install if I were to obtain a 64bit Windows 7 distribution disk? (i.e. By borrowing a friend's 64bit install disk but using the key given to me by Microsoft?) I have already pre-ordered Win 7 a few months back. When it arrives in Oct, can I use the 64bit install disk that I will be shipped a second time on another machine with the 32bit key that I was given to install as 64bit? I guess what I am asking is simply: are the keys provided by Microsoft for Windows 7 32bit/64bit agnostic?? P.S. Microsoft, please don't hand out only 32bit versions of Win 7 at Live Launch events attended by uber geeks anymore! At the very least, include the 64bit version!!!

When you attend the launch event, look for a Microsoft representative and ask them if it is possible toobtaina 64-bit version.Carey Frisch

Carey Frisch Great advice for those that will be going to a future launch event... but it doesn't help the hundreds of us that just attended today's launch event in Minneapolis. Anyone out there know if the key issued with the 32bit media DVD of Ultimate that was given to the attendees today (the DVD clearly states that it is the 32bit version) will work with the 64bit version of Ultimate?

Yes, I agree with you Superchared_Z06, when I got home after the today's event in Minneapolis I opened the case and it was only the 32bit OS. I of course was really disappointed because my computer itself runs 12GB of memory and I've always used 64bit. They should have said something to us beforehand or while they were giving them out that they were only giving out the 32bit.

ditto... i drove 650 miles to the event and basically it was a bust for me. I have 8GB of memory in my box too. Edit: I just verified that the key works with 64bit also.

Same here for me. I attended the event in Denver yesterday and got home and found the 32 bit version. Is there any way to get 64 bit downloded from somewhere?

What I did was download a copy of "Windows 7 Professional x64" from my buddies school account and just deleted the ei.cfg so I could install "Ultimate" so as long as you can find a copy of a Windows 7 x64 you can install "Ultimate". You just need to edit the .iso and then recompile it without the ei.cfg file.

I went to the Denver event too and was dissapointed to get 32 bit only... I like how the back of the package says "32- and/or 64- bit disc inside" Has anyone heard of anyone getting a 64 bit disc from one of these launch events?

I haven't heard of anyone getting a 64-bit disk, everyone at the Launch Event in Minneapolis got 32-bit to my knowledge. Also for Shane Fatzinger your key will work for any copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, be it 32- or 64-bit. I used the MSDN Windows 7 Professional .iso to install my Windows 7 Ultimate and the key worked just fine.

I went to the Chicago event today - the same story with only 32 bit disks. However I stumbled across a Microsoft employee with forms requesting an upgrade to 64 bit. I happily filled out the form and turned it in, keeping the bottom tear-off portion. It states "Windows 7 64-bit request. This is your proof that you have requested an exchange for a Windows 7 64-bit DVD. If you have not heard from us in a month, please email tne64@microsoft.com. Thank you again for your interest in Windows 7". My guess that this email address might be your only avenue to getting the version you need. I found this forum while searching the web for a 64bit iso that i could try my product key on.

Does anyone know if this key will work with the ISO for Win7 Ultimate x64 from MSDN? Slightly off topic but Hewlett Packard distruibutes computerspreinstalled with win 7 64-bit but never have I seen 32. Very odd these events don't distribite 64-bit only which will soon be the new industry standard. The same edition key will work onboth 64 bit and 32 bit OS.
