Domain user account on welcome screen
Windows XP used to have a domain select box on the welcome screen. Unfortunatly that is gone now. On the Windows 7 welcome screen you may switch between local and domain login by typing <pc-name>\<local user> or <domain name>\<domain user>. This is very annoying because people hardly remember their user names. To expect they can keep the name of their PC and the name of their office domain name in mind is even more unrealistic. I read that there is no need for local logins since Windows caches the domain login credentials. But if you have a notebook you may want to use it in your office and while your away. In your office you need to access different resources than at home. So there is indeed a need for different user profiles that are provided by different user logins. How is the task of easy switching between local and domain login meant to be solved? Thank you very much Gordon

No such function is provided in Windows 7. There is a workaround that may make the thing easier. Open regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Add a string valie “DefaultUserName” in the branch WinLogon. Change the value data to “[domainname]\[domainaccount]”. Then, when startup the domain account is the default user. If you would like to logon to a local account, just enter “.\[localaccount]”.
