Domain Users on a SBS2003 domain who log on to a newly installed Win 7 Pro PC get the message "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile"
Nothing has been added to the 2 PCs. As Domain Admin I can successfully log on and I get a profile. Domain Users can not log on with their own Roaming Profile. Following the unsuccessful logon a default Temporary Profile is given and programmes such as Outlook do not remember their settings. Domain Users have been added to the Local Admin group, but this does not affect the issue. The ProfileList in the Registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList) does not include the User who has failed to log on successfully. The user profile has not been deleted accidentally as the user has never logged on successfully to this PC, although they have successfully logged on to Win XP PCs and they do have a Roaming Profile. Domain Admins seem able to log on correctly. Event Viewer includes an entry which suggests this is a permissions issue. I don't have access to the PC for a few days, but I noticed that the error includes "Acces is Denied". SBS 2003 R2 with SP2. Any help greatly appreciated!

SBS2003 all the way patched? Do you have folder redirection configured in a GPO? Windows 7 (and Vista) store data into a different directory (C:\Users) instead of XP (C:\Documents and Settings\) . It might not be playing nice with the newer OSes. (I ran into a similar issue with joining Windows 7 to a SBS2008 server. It said the OS didn't exist, until a few specific patches were applied.) Have you checked the Windows Logs (Start > right-click Computer > Manage > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Security/System logs) for more detailed information about the error?MCSE: 6771498

Thanks for the response Stealthfield. Yes, the Server is fully patched. I haven't set any folderr redirections in GPO that aren't set by default (although I didn't set up the Server originally) I'm back with that client later this week, so I shall look into GPO and the Event Viewer logs then, Michael

Hi, You need to check whether the Roaming Profile is not corrupt. also check the folder's permissions. In addition, please check the Client's Disk via some Disk tools. perhaps, the disk logistic error can also cause your issue.

Thanks Juke Chou, but the Roaming Profile is good on Win XP PCs and the problem exists on 2 new PCs, so it won't be a disk error. I'm not sure which folder's permissions you suggest I should check? Michael

Hi, If you can logon with the same account, it means that the permission of your profile is good. I still suggest you to check the disk.

I never did get to the bottom of this problem. It was definitely a permissions issue with a Win 7 User failing to have correct permissions on a SBS 2003 Server - but what permissions have failed? I have now formatted the PCs and reverted them to Win XP and everything is fine. The GPO doesn't have any Folder Redirections set up, so no confusion there. I'd strill like to get to the bottom of the problem as the client will eventually want another Win 7 PC installed.
