Domain PC won't access internet at home
School network using group policy to configure domain computers to access the internet via the school proxy server. All school computers are XP PRO SP2. I have experimented with Vista Business - not officially supported on the school system but teachers will insist on buying new laptops without asking me for advice! - and I can connect the laptop to the school domain and provide access to all shares etc with no problems. However, when the teacher goes home and connects to his home network he cannot acceess the internet. With XP I tell them to log on locally and everything is fine - dhcp from the adsl router and away they go. Under Vista they log on with a local account but the group policy seems to prevent them from being configured by the router. I have searched forums, microsoft support, google etc and can find no reference to this issue. Is it something I am doing - or not doing - or is it a Vista feature!? Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance for any help.

What's your DC: Win2k, 2k3, Novell, or a Linux flavor? The workstations get IP info via DHCP (when on the domain), or static?Do you have DNS set in a GPO at the school?Would it be possible to get the output of ipconfig /all from one of the Vista laptops when it's not currently connected to the domain?

Thanks Chris,I should have said that the domain is all Win2K3, the domain controller provides DHCP, DNS, AD etc.The GPO sets the Internet Connection proxy settings where you would manually go to Control Panel | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings | Proxy Server. This is done to ensure that all workstations access the internet but it seems to affect the laptop even off-site. I could tell the teacher(s) to go through the above and change it (de-select Proxy Server) but I don't think that would work - for the teacher that is!I'll have to see if I can borrow a laptop for a few minutes to get the ipconfig data but that won't be until tomorrow. I'll get a copy of the same data when connected as well.

Hi, I perform a test on my Windows Vista machine but I do not reproduce the issue. The proxy setting is cleared when I logon the Windows Vista with local account. Since there is no drop down list to select whether log on to the domain or to the local computer and cache logon is enabled in Windows Vista, I recommend that you confirm if the user does logon with the local account.

Guys,Thanks for your input and I am now puzzled!I could not get hold of the teacher's laptop - hence the delay in following up - so I took my laptop along and connected it to the school domain.I then took it back and connected it at work. Although the ipconfig /all retained some references to the school it cleared out the important stuff and I was able to access the internet with no problems. So, I have to get hold of the teacher's laptop that started all this and see what is happening. Patience please!
