You can always use more advanced search queries in both the start menu but also in the top right search box found in Windows Explorer. Have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/technicalresources/advquery.mspx for more information.

yeah i have already seen i bet it had something to do with windows search 4.0 which i have no intention of installing even uninstalling WMP12 caused me problems i see no reason to install any thing from microsoft thanks for the help.

Windows Search 4.0 is included by default in Windows 7 (and even Windows Vista with SP2) so you already have it and can start using these advanced search queries instantly :)

First, I realize this thread is ancient, but I'm searching for 'SEARCH' options for Windows 7 and am unbelievably frustrated. Everyone that's not a thread moderator is exceedingly kind In short, here's the deal Microsoft - it is those of us Windows users that must actually USE Window 7 USERS Search Functionality. No one is complaining if you want to do some cool command line options for searching using Windows 7... It's cool if you want to build some kind of advanced 'thinking' search functionality, in a command line format - but don't take away something that NO ONE HAS EVER complained about! If ANYONE EVER complained about Windows Search - it's because they wanted MORE options and a simpler interface. No one ever complained about the search interface itself. This may provide more options, but it's surely NOT simpler - at least not for 95% of us. Sorry, but it's ludicrous to GO BACKWARDS to 1985 DOS days and use syntax / command line AFTER you've had a successful, functional & intuitive GUI that 99% of prior windows users are familiar with. I still use DOS commands for the things we have always had to use command lines for / or have had as an option in the RUN or CMD box... I happen to know many of these command lines / syntax because at one time there was no GUI for them originally. But to go backwards and mandate syntax / command line search without something reasonably familiar... well, somebody at MS goofed big time. BTW - sometimes we don't want Windows to THINK for us... we want to tell it what we want and we expect it to do it... Hopefully this does not portend a more 'thinking' windows in the future (at least not more than it already does). You can think I'm just stupid, slow or whatever you prefer - but we're you're customers and if we're complaining about the lack of search functionality (or the difficulty of learning your new system (legitimately so) you guys should be listening and figuring out a way to fix this or add an option. Either that or you guys need to re-write technical manuals because there are a lot of other stupid people like me who think your search is pure garbage in comparison to XP. Windows 7 is a superior platform over XP but the search functionality (or lack / difficulty thereof) will go down in history as a significant Windows 7 faux paux. This is only one customers feedback - but I'm pretty sure I'm not alone...
