Does the Page File effect performance?
My dad found a computer with Windows xp Service pack 2 with 256 mb of ram and I was wonder if increasing the page file to say 10 gb would increases performance since it is so low already, especially with a Pentium 3 996 Mhz processor, though removing all the adware that was on it might impact performance1 person needs an answerI do too

The best thing you can to do improve performance is to add more RAM.Adding additional size to the page file, in that fashion, will not make performance better. The best option is usually to let Windows manage the size. If you feel compelled to take matters into your own hands, consider the guidance in the "How Big Should I Make the Paging File?" part of Pushing the Limits of Windows: Virtual Memory.Certainly, get all malware/undesirable software off of the system.

You have no idea how the computer has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses andspyware there may be, etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebodyelse's mistakes and problems, possibility of kiddy p0rn, etc., and Iwouldn't recommend that anyone else do so either.Ken Blake

Well I would like to reinstall the operating system but I don't have the disk to do so and I already deleted all of the files from the previous user except for a hidden user account that only appearers when I start in safe mode (any ideas?). I would install a linux system as it is the only disk I have but the Cd drive gives me a never ending repeating error after I insert the disk.About adding ram the ram in this thing is really old like the ram in my dads computer so it would probably cost $100+ to get more ram.I guess I'l just let windows manage the ram
