Does Windows 7 verify on file copy?
The Windows 7 documentation for the command line XCOPY command notes that the /v verify switch is present only for compatibility with OS's earlier than XP and Server 2003. It does not explicitly discuss later OS's. That leads to two questions:1. Does XCOPY in Windows 7 automatically verify?2. Does the standard GUI copy in Windows 7 automatically verify?

Hi DrumMemory, By default Xcopy commands checks or verifies each file you are trying to copy (/v - Verifies each new file). It verifies each file as it is written to the destination file to make sure that the destination files are identical to the source files. GUI(Graphical user interface) does verify the file, only if the file of the same size is present in the location. Thanks and Regards: Samhrutha G S - Microsoft Support. You should be able verify the behavior with Sysinternals' Process Monitor.

Samhrutha,Thanks for your response. Please though, clarify your qualifier regarding the behavior of the GUI copy "only if the file of the same size is present in the location". Does this refer to a file of the same size present before the copy or after the copy? By "location", do you mean "target"? Obviously copy didn't work if the file in the target location has a diffent size and copy could immediately report a failure. Does the GUI copy report this failure? Does your qualifier mean that if the file sizes match after the copy, copy goes on to verify that the contents match? That would be nice if it did.Thanks.

Actually, this is where it was moved, you're here at the destination (the TechNet Windows 7 Misc Forum). They moved it here in hopes that it would generate more participation and gain some answers. When moderators move the post, they don't leave a "dead" copy in the old location.
