Does Windows 7 image backup work fine for a SSD?
N.b.: The moderator on a different Windows7 advised to post this here:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/thread/361ae102-a1f2-4d55-b6c0-89051e1ac9b0 We are getting new HP Envy PCs with Solid State Drive (SSD) as the primary C: drive, and with regular HDD for the second drive we'll use for daily backups (no network backups for images). I want to know if we will have any problems in case of a crash, using our backup image on the HDD to produce a new SSD working C: drive. For example, acronis does have some such problems; seehttp://kb.acronis.com/content/2699 andhttp://forum.acronis.com/forum/7687 . Will Windows 7 image backups have such problems? Thanks. Lester

I can tell you from my experience with an SSD in an Asus Eee PC 1000HE and in a Dell Inspiron 1501 this scenario has worked for me. With the Eee PC I used a 2.5" notebook drive in a USB external case and in the Dell I have a second SSD in place of the DVD drive. I used Windows 7 Backup and Restore to make the backup images and a Win 7 Restore Disc for recovery. Acronis is probably better at making an image to restore from, but with Win 7's security I have encountered too many files that it could not backup wihile the system is running. Acronis does a better job of imaging when it is done off line; the system has to reboot and Acronis does the imageing before the system reboots into windows.

Rick: So, your success with Win7 image backups is based on having both the primary and backup drives being SSDs? I think I read on another posting that Win7 backup somehow includes info on the backup drive, and the image backup does not work if the primary is SSD and the backup is HHD. Is this what you also surmise? I still have not yet gotten a straight reply from Acronis on the issues mentioned in my posting. Thanks for your reply. Lester

I have both situations. My Dell 1501 has two SSDs and the Eee PC has one SSD. I use a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive in a USB external case for the backups of the Eee PC. Using Win 7 Backup and Restore I have restored the images on both notebooks without a problem; from the 2nd SSD in the Dell and from and extrenal hard drive to the Eee PC. As I stated before, Acronis must have some problem with the security settings on certain files in Win 7. When I tried to do a full system backup with the intent of using it for restoring the system, there were numerous errors where Acronis was not able to backup those files. I have used Acronis to image the system drive in which Acronis has reboots the system and apparently loads it own mini OS to make an image of the system drive and I was able to restore a system by that method.
