Does Windows 7 Home Premium support web folders (WebDAV)?
I would like to know if Windows 7 Home Premium supports web folders (WebDAV). When I try to use the feature in Windows 7 Home Premium I get a message that says "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another." In Vista I used this feature successfully after applying Microsoft patch KB907306 (Software Update for Web Folders), but applying that patch in Windows 7 Home Premium is not helpful for me. One discussion suggested using a 3rd partly application called BitKinex, but that didn''t work for me. Another discussion suggested using XP Mode which is available only in more expensive versions of Windows 7. I'll upgrade if I need to. I would greatly appreciate a yes or no answer about web folders support in Windows 7 Home Premium. If yes, I'll continue to try to make it work!

from these comments I would say yesUnchecking "Automatically detect settings" as described above instantly made my SharePoint WebDAV over SSL (Explorer View) more responsive. I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit build 7600 with all available updates installed.I have noticed similar issue. One fix that works for me is to make sure that the proxy settings in IE are disabled. For some reason, at times, the settings "Automatically Detect Settings" In the connection tab reset itself. If it is disabled it works great.indeed, unchecking "Automatically Detect Settings" resolved this for me instantly as well, thanks! I'm using RTM (Build 7600).Indeed - switch off checkbox Automaticaly detect setting in IE8 / Tools / Internet Options / Connections / LAN settings / Automatic configuration. Then it is light speed again. From this discussion http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/600a9825-0ba1-4c15-93f6-fc99c64b4930MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. cdobbs- Thanks for your reply. I'm not using either SharePoint or Internet Explorer, so your suggestions don't appear to be relevant to my problem, but they may be helpful to others. I'm simply using Windows Explorer. My new home computer with Windows 7 Home Premium is the client, and my workplace has the server. The Web Folders feature still works great for me using Vista (patched with KB907306) on my old home computer. -jaybeau

Bubbapcguy- Thanks for the suggestion of ending the path with a slash. I tried it, but unfortunately it made no difference. -jaybeau

Thanks Vivian. The page you suggested is mostly about setting-up a server for webdav (I'm a client), but it did interestingly mention connecting as a client using the NET USE command line command. I gave it a try a number of times. I think I finally got the syntax right, but I still wasn't able to get Web Folders going. I'm still hoping someone from Microsoft who knows the answer will read my question and give a yes/no about whether Web Folders are supported in Windows 7 Home Premium. However, it would be just as good to hear from Win 7 Home Premium users who are successfully using Web Folders in Windows Explorer (without SharePoint). Are there any successful Win 7 web folders users out there? -jaybeau

Thanks Vivian- I tried the suggestions on that link from user RichardvI, who reported success. However, my result was like that of user pettitpeon (who also tried RichardvI 's suggestions). The initial steps went well: Went to Start -> Run -> Services and started the WebClient service. Set the Properties so it would start automatically with Windows 7 Created a browser shortcut on the desktop that links to my workplace WebDAV URL. The URL I use is https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/oneNet/NetStorage (the x's are numbers). This URL opens a Novell NetStorage web page that, after logging-in, facilitates downloading and uploading files. Lists the several workplace drives that I access via web folders. The NetStorage web page is OK for moving files, but it is not nearly as handy as the web folders feature in Windows Explorer. The final step, "map networkdrives to webdav location" (in Windows Explorer), did not go well. As suggested I right-clicked on Computer, selected "Map network drive," entered my credentials (twice, because it insisted), and then received this error message: "The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred: a device attached to the system is not functioning." I also tried "Add a network location" and got this error message: "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another." I am out of ideas. If anybody has futher suggestions I'd be glad to hear them. My yes/no question about support for web folders in Windows 7 Home Premium remains unanswered by Microsoft, although a moderator has been helpful in furthering the discussion. A couple of users have reported successfully using the feature, so I guess the answer is probably yes. However, it doesn't work for me (and a lot of other users apparently) in Windows 7, despite it having worked well in Vista and XP. I'll keep monitoring this thread and similar threads in hope of finding a solution. If I eventually have success I'll share the method here! -jaybeau

jaybeau, when you posted you used windows explorer I ASSUMED you where using a client like netdrive from Novell http://www.theblog.ca/novell-netdrive or the new one http://www.netdrive.net/ (free for home use)we use the new one under win7 and it works fine. installed using the compat troubleshooter

bubbapcguy- Thanks. Yes, I've been using plain vanilla Windows Explorer. For me, it supports web folders (WebDAV) wonderfully in Vista after applying patch KB907306. I wasn't aware of the free, third-party program called NetDrive that adds Web Folders functionality to Windows Explorer. Sounds great. I tried to install it, but got this error message: "NetDrive is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows." Would it be correct to conclude that you are using 32-bit Windows 7? Or did "compat troubleshooter" (I don't know what that is) help with the 64-bit issue? -jaybeau

Yea no 64 bit workstations for us...a few of the autocad users had me order them but all but one has gone back to 32 bit.compatibility troubleshooterright click the *.exe and select it form the drop down, it will check for what it needs and then show you "start program" click that and watch the taskbarthe install will start reduced to the bar pull it up and start the install. You are 50 / 50 on getting 32 bit to work under 64 bit.I had a LONG talk with Dell about that on Mon. (they shipped two laptops ordered as 32 bit XP pro with 64 bit win 7...doing me a favor they said. Now they are out shipping and had to give me free ram for the hassle...

bubbapcguy- I tried installing NetDrive using the Troubleshooter in Control Panel as you suggested. Troubleshooter ran the NetDrive installation program in "Windows compatibility mode: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)," but it ended with the same error message as before ( "NetDrive is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows."). I guess I got the wrong 50.

I got this working guys. Long story short it can be done. Windows 7 64 will connect to webdav. The short answer is that they've disabled webdav to servers using basic authentication. Your sever needs to use Digest based authentication. Details are on my blog at http://shon.org I changed the server to use AuthDigest and it started working. You could try to change Windows as well. The registry info is on my blog too but I haven't tried that approach. good luck!

Please also check the following link:http://www.slickit.ca/2009/07/webdav-on-windows-7.html Vivian Xing - MSFT I was only trying to map a network drive, not set up Webdav on a server, and I was able to do so easily using the advice in the article posted by Vivian. The key is that WebDav needs to be enabled in "Windows Features." This article explains how to do that. Then skip the stuff about IIS setup and scroll down to the part about the Net Use command. Thanks much for the web article, Vivian.Tricia Schodowski

This doesn't fix the issue and should not be marked as the answer. Just say the Windows 7 will not be supporting WebDAV unless it's on a sharepoint server.
