Disk upgrade
I recalll a tool from Microsoft that could help move a system from one disk to a new one. I wanted to make the system disk bigger and I have a larger disk on hand. Back in the old days of Windows 98 I could copy a disk easy and use SYS to make it bootable no problem. Windows 2000 and up you cannot do that so easy. Anyone know what tools are available? Most disk manufacturers provide software to do this. As an example, Western Digital provides a basic version of Acronis True Image. Check the support site of your larger disk. Jerry

I have a CD from WDC but I did not notice that tool on it. I will check with Seagate and WDC and see what they have. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe Need a some parts finish the new server, see the site for remaining items needed

If you follow the install steps on your CD, there should be an option to copy an existing OS to the disk. You should check the Seagate and WD sites for the latest copy of the install CDs though. Jerry

Neither of them seem to be able to cope with the 100MB small boot partition that Windows 7 uses. I guess I will start fresh as it is time to make fresh backups anyway. Did you look at the WD version of Acronis True image at: http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en It supports drive cloning and Windows Vista. I think the Win 7 file and partition structure is close enough to Vista that it should work. As long as one of your drives is a WD drive, you should be able to run it. Jerry

I have Seagate and WDC disks and a few others in the junk box. Seems the WDC tool forces the destiination to their disk. The Seagate Disk Wizard is less clear. Its to backup anyway. I have a Seagate notebook disk in a USB box that I recovered from a DOA notebook that I now use for backups. I use 7-zip is faster than the built-in tool and the Windows 7 backup is about as useless as it gets. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)!
