I've done both (thanks) but the appearance of chkdsk doesnt look similar to Scan Disk (where it frees up disk space and gives the user options to free up). Are both the same? If not, how do I restore Scan Disk Cleanup program (which was my initial question)?

We have a bit of a mix up hereIn XP Scan Disk has been replaced by chkdsk. You are actually referring to Disk Cleanup Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup Click OK to clean up the "C" drive first It will take a little while to "calculate" Look at what is checked for deletion in the box. Make sure that "Compress old files " is NOT checked. The rest is your choice..

Hi Cybertek:Yes, there was a mixup but my XP does have Disk Cleanup and as of last week when I clicked on that program, the popup appeared: "Dick space cleanup manager has encountered a problem and needs to close"... so what I really meant to ask is how do I get that Disk Cleanup program back? Also I'm wondering what's causing this problem? Lastly, you mentioned NOT to check 'compress old files' - what's the reason (I have been checking that box though)? Very much appreciated!!

OKOpen Notepad copy and paste the below into notepad From within notepad select the file menu then "save as" Save as CDisk.Reg and save to desktop. Open desktop file and double click on the file to run When prompted to merge into registry say yes. Reboot and try disk cleanup.REGEDIT4 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files] The risk in compressing old files is that if you do need to access them or an application needs to access them, the computer will respond more slowly because the files need to be uncompressed before they can be opened or used. There's also a risk of corruption..
