I read the blog and tried to find the Conditions tab for Idle Maintenance change it. I can't find it. The PC doesn't recognize the terms. Can anyone help me. I am so tired of looking at that pop-up too.

We do not suggest for normal computer users to switch off the maintenance task(s), but if you are running Windows 8.1 and facing a pop up issue you may want to do that. You can find these by opening Task Scheduler by type schedule in search box.

You'll quickly find that if you go into Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/task scheduler folder there are four tasks listed that are controlling Windows maintenance if your Windows is up to date.

Idle Maintenance

Maintenance Configurator

Manual Maintenance

Regular Maintenance

You can disable Idle Maintenance tasks from here.

If you found that the Maintenance Configurator task runs, it re-enables the other tasks.

When you try to disable the Maintenance Configurator task you'll receive a message that your user account doesn't have the permission needed to disable the task.

Even activating the build-in Administrator account & attempting to disable the task from that account will yield the same result.

Here's how to work around the issue and disable the Maintenance Configurator task.

1. Open Windows Explorer and browse to \Windows\System32\Tasks
2. When you click on the Tasks folder you'll receive a permission error stating you don't have permission to access the folder. Click the Continue button now continue and browse to \Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\TaskScheduler
3. Right click the Maintenance Configurator listing, select Properties, select the Security tab and click the Advanced button
4. Click Change next to the Owner: listing.
5. In the Select User or Group type Users in the box and press the Check Names button Click OK three times to close all windows.
6. Right click the Maintenance Configurator listing for a second time, select Properties and click the Security tab and click the Edit button to change permissions Select Administrators and check Full control under the Allow column
7. Click OK, click Yes on the security warning you receive that you are about to change permissions settings on a system folder, next click OK to close the Maintenance Configurator properties window

Now you can right-click the Maintenance Configurator task in Task Scheduler and select Disable. You will now be able to disable the Idle Maintenance and Regular Maintenance tasks without Windows re-enabling them.

Although Deason's suggestion has successfully disabled 'Maintenance Configurator', 'Regular Maintenance' is either still being re-enabled by some hidden force whenever I change users, or possibly my disabling of it is not being saved, even though immediately after I disable it its status in the Task Scheduler window does change from 'Ready' to 'Disabled'.

Task Scheduler does not appear to have any explicit or manual 'Save' option or command, so presumably it is supposed to automatically save changes as soon as 'Enter' is pressed while "OK' or 'Apply' options are active or when a command icon is clicked.

I am happy for the 'Idle maintenance' task to continue running, I just don't want the laptop to be woken up for maintenance.

Thanks Deason, I successfully disabled the Maintenance Configurator by following your suggested steps but I found that my original problem persists.

This problem is that my laptop is being woken from sleep by the Regular Maintenance scheduled task, and my un-ticking of the 'Wake the computer to run this task' box keeps being changed back to the ticked state by some malevolent gremlin behind the scenes.

I had been led to believe that this gremlin was the Maintenance Configurator, but even though it is staying disabled the 're-ticking' continues.

I don't have any reason to want to switch Regular Maintenance off altogether, I just want it to stop waking the computer.  I would much rather that it did maintenance during idle periods after the computer has been manually woken by me.

FYI I am running a simple basic 8.1 home edition configuration on a Gigabyte G3+850-4703 S laptop.
