Disk Burner Doesn't Exist - Windows 7 - Administrative Account
Upon trying to burn an ISO image to a disk using the native Windows 7 Image Burning : Burn Image functionality, I was presented with an error message that the "Disk Burner Doesn't Exist" or something to that effect. I was logged in as an user with Administrative priviledges (member of the Administrators Group). The Windows\System32 file 'isoburn.exe' does not have compatibility attributes that can be modified, so you can't elevate it to 'Run as Administrator'... I came across a solution that would involve disabling UAC and another that would require killing the windows 'explorer' process logging out, and then logging in which was troublesome because the whole desktop disappears when the windows 'explorer' process is killed. The only way to log out is to hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and invoke the Task Manager from which you can logout. This was unsatisfactory. The way I solved this problem was to "take ownership" of the isoburn.exe application by switching the owner from the Trusted Installer to Administrators. This requires clicking on the security tab, hitting the Advanced button, navigating to the Owner tab and changing the owner to Administrators. The security then has to be closed out and reopened whereupon the any member of the Administrator group can then 'Edit' the permissions and take full control of the isoburn.exe application. The System still maintains active control, and the Trusted Installer still has full control as well. The normal user cannot use the 'burn image' option and must download another application that allows for burning without Administrative rights. Another member suggested Active@ Iso Burner which is freeware and does a good job for exactly this purpose. ImgBurn is also a good choice. Upon logging into the administrative user account again and using right click > Burn Image, the image burner is now available and works like a champ... I don't think that this solution is as risky as disabling UAC, or even worse elevating the explorer application to run with administrative rights!!! If anybody has any comments on this solution then please alert me. Ken NieblingKenneth Niebling k.niebling@live.com ken.niebling@yahoo.com (preferred) ken.niebling@gmail.com
