Disk 0 and Disk 1 keep switching places in Disk Management
Mornin' Folks, Got a curiosity here, and was wondering if my assumptions are correct. Situation: 2 hd's 1=300+gbs; 2=500+gbs. Coulda' swore that I loaded 1 as 0, installed win 7 on it(from boot, partitioned it there, as well as partioning 2 more volumes on same), partioned 2(disk 1) with 3 equal partions. When building sys plugged sata cords into appropriate slots. Loaded win 7 on disk 0. Left other partitions alone to do later from OS gui, did NOT load anything on disk 1 (the 500) but did partition it from the boot, at the boot disk option. Wiped all clean, reformatted all internals...etc., etc.. I reconfig the BIOS, Win 7 boots...ouila! Config the unallocated spaces (remember I partitioned them with the win 7 disk at initial) with Disk Manager GUI. Put a swap file on 1st volume disk 1. Disk 0 configs its own reserved where I had installed the OS...I know this. Put a 400 mb. sys managed pagefile on disk 0. Got rid of hiberfil.sys. Swap file for ENTIRE 'puter on disk 1, partition/volume 1...first part./vol. EVERYTHING = hunky dorey.....yee haw! Now, on at least a weekly basis disk 0 and disk 1 switch places as seen in Disk Manager (right click 'puter...Manage...Storage...Disk Management) ALONG WITH: All the volumes, files, AND the OS. So sometimes the 300 has the OS, volumes, files, etc. and sometimes the 500 has the OS, volumes, files, etc. This is perlexing. Everything runs fine Theory: I don't think that I designated the sata cord on the physical hd's as master/slave. Rather, as Auto, hence the 'ol switcheroo. So, the question is: Is this why they keep switchin'??????? And when I say EVERYTHING switches disks, I mean EVERYTHING. 'Preciate y'alls help Horatio ps. At this moment in time Disk 0 (300) has the swap file and other files, AND Disk 1 (500) has the Reserved, C:\root, and 2 other volumes with assorted files. It switched on me last nite...I leave the sys runnin'(screensaver kicks in), rebooting only to "chisel in stone" newly tried/deleted progs, and or to purge my swap(configurred through Registry to do so at shutdown.

1. Your problem description is not easy to follow. I suggest you to pinpoint the target configuration and focus on this target. 2. Use EasyBCD to configure booting of multiple system. 3. Do not use too complacated structure with multiple changes of BIOS boot setting. Otherwise you can end up with system that fails to boot. Regards Milos

Milos, Thank you sir, No, I do NOT need a multiple boot config, Yes it is complicated. And perlexing, hence the question to the technet gurus. Bottom line: Disk 0 and Disk 1 (it was the 300 and 500 gb drives respectively) switch places in "Disk Management" and what is reflected in "DM" are the volumes (complete with drive letters and disk names), all the files, the OS, Everything that would be configged from the ONSET. AT various intervals, no I haven't timed at what times they switch, they switch places. Disk 0 (initially the 300 gb) and Disk 1 (initially the 500) switch, interchange. The 300 becomes Disk 1 and the 500 becomes Disk 0. COMPLETE! So: Question: Why? Is this just a fluke, not enough coffee on my part and this is a hallucination, OR, is it the possibility that because I never designated the drives as master/slave when building the sys that the drives do this on their own? Thanks for the reply....evidently I've stumped the rest of the forum as you're the only one thats replied Horatio ps. Standby...lemme see where they're at now...Disk 0 is now the 300 gb with the pagefile vol., and two other volumes. Disk 1 is now the 500 with the sys reserved, then my c:\ win, and the other volumes.....wait a minute....maybe I answered my own question!!!! Ok, new additional question: Is it possible that the bio, OS do this to give the root directory drive a larger hd storage drive? Again...Thanks horatio

About the only thing I can think of, if you're not switching physical connections is that something is happening in BIOS. - either you're flipping the boot order there, and Windows is interpreting it differently, or something is getting stuck, and the boot order is changing as a consequence. Seems like no one, nobody, wants to touch this...HMMMM? Have I stumped the forum? And just in case y'all are wonderin': 1. No, I'm not the average home user. 2. I have worked in tech support at the local university, supporting 1000+ sys of all flavors...linux(and its sub flavors), oracle, macs, and win OS's. 3. I am an MCP 4. I am A+ Certified 5. Have built ALL of my own systems, which then became a home built network so that I could create/troubleshoot the various scenarios that I came across at work. 6. Enjoy the "puzzle" with which I am using to write this...rocket scientist I am NOT, comp enthusiast - Yes. 7. And really, only peruse/give validity to the Technet websites as MOST of the others that I do surf are not technical enough (a tad on the elementary side) for me. So Folks....anyone have any ideas on my Disks switchin' around on me?
