You can use DISM to disable/remove features and packages you don't want."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

You're talking about enabling/disabling Windows features?1. Start with the Control Panel -> Programs and Features applet.2. At the upper-left, follow the Turn Windows features on or off link.Hope this helps.-Noel

Thank you guys. I really appreciate your response. Noel, I know this step, but I mean that I need the Ultimate edition to be as light as the Starter edition, because I'm intending to install it on an old machine.

Just try it. I found Ultimate only running 29 processes when I first did the clean install. That's pretty light, especially as compared to Vista. A lot of things just don't run unless you try to use them.-Noel

Hi, There are too many differences. Some of them are system kernel related and we cannot change them. Please enumerate your requirements and we will be able to help you.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Thank you, To be more clear, disabling Aero and Windows Search will help to make this edition as light as possible. So the question is what else will help too?

Aero will not even ENable if the system isn't up to it. Disabling the indexing service may be a good idea for several reasons. Other things to consider disabling are the services that support media player and media center, UAC (depending on your needs)... I don't recall many choices during install, so you're going to have to install it first before disabling features anyway. Then have at it via the various interfaces (Programs and Features, Services List, Autoruns). Even a stock installation of Windows 32 bit Ultimate isn't heavy to start with - I've seen it well under 500MB of memory usage and under 30 processes. I'd love to know how trim you can make it if you really try.-Noel

MOH, Even Windows starter has close to the same disk requirements as Ultimate as the system files are largely the same. I suggest finding the biggest disk possible and not worry about it.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Noel, Thank you for your tips, I'll go through these tips and see. I did installation on various machines, and some of them handle Windows 7 perfectly and some of them don't. I'm not 100% sure if this particular machine is going to handle the new OS or not, but anyway I'll let you know what happened.

Compared to XP, Windows 7 is more productive for me, mind you I am a hard-core power user with 4-10 tabs of FF and 12 other programs running all at once. The task bar is excellent and with a hi-res screen its fabulous to get programs up fast.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! WoW, sounds powerful, For me, most of the machines aren't mine (friends, relatives). I don't think that they are going to do as you do. They just want Windows 7 on their machines to be responsive and operate smoothly.

Hi, you can use Win Integrator (http://cid-f03433d3c53d5342.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/WI/Release/Beta/WinIntegrator1.0.2.7.rar) from StefanRTR to remove unneeded functions. It's an DISM wrapper, so you do not have care about how to use DISM.exe André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/
