Disabling System Restore/Protection using Group Policy (AD Environment)
Hello everyone! We are piloting a few Windows 7 systems in our school district before doing a large scale roll-out this summer. So far, the pilot computers have performed very well only needing minor tweaks here and there, and I am very optimistic and looking forward to moving most of our computers over. We currently do not use System Restore, we have always had it disabled in XP (we never deployed Vista). We want to continue doing this with Windows 7, and of course want to configure the clients using Group Policies. My issue is this: I have set the policies in "Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/System Restore/Turn off System Restore" as well as "Turn Off Configuration" - in the same path - both to "Enabled". On the Win7 clients, this results in all System Restore options being grayed out (as in WinXP). Unfortunately in Windows 7 the C:\ (system) drive still reports protection being on (unlike WinXP). I am hoping someone else has run into this; searching the net this afternoon did not reveal any answers. Thank you in advance for any replies! -Dan

The protection may be reporting as such as only an indicator that shadow copy service is available or running. This is just an educated guess, but I know it works on the same principle as the Windows 7 Restore. If this was helpful, please vote by clicking the green triangle. If it solves the issue, click Propose as Answer. Thanks!

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. If the "Turn off System Restore" setting is enabled, the "Turn off Configuration" setting is overwritten. Please enable "Turn off System Restore" and leave "Turn off Configuration" as not configured. If the issue still occurs, another option is to configure a computer startup script to disable System Restore for these Windows 7 system.
