Disable System Restore in Windows 7
Hello I have set DisableSR=1, DisableConfig=1 in policies using GP for system Restore, but still I can see System Protection is ON on my c: drive. Also, when I install a critical hotfix I can see using vssadmin that new restore points are getting created. How Can I disable System Restore completely using commandline or registry? The issue we are facaing on few Windows 7 clients is that after hotfix installations machines are getting restored back to previous state and our end user losing their applications. Regards, SB

Hi, Thanks for the post! When you install some hotfix, considering of data security, system will create a new restore points. Given your situation, I suspect this issue is not related to the System Restore, but the hotfix itself. Please provide us with more detailed information about this hotfix. Thanks for reply, I will have to look into specific hotfix, as we had the cases where hotfixes for september and October were rolled out.. Also, I wonder when we set the Group polciy to disable System Restore, shouldn't it delete all exisiting Restore points(as the feature is disabled). The scenario that happened with us was - on some machine installation of hotfix went wrong and it went into Startup Recovery, where though the system Restore feature is disabled using GP, user is asked for "System restore". We dont want our Users to perform any kind of system Restore using Windows or Startup Repair recovery option. When we apply the GP shouldn't the system restore option be completely disabled everywhere deleting all restore points? Regards, SB
