Disable Missed call notification only for Lync, not entire UM

I have a scenario where I need to disable the missed call notifications from Lync.

I know that you can disable All missed call notifications from Unified messaging by going into Outook - Tools - Options - Voicemail - and uncheck the missed call notification section.   But that won't work for us, here's why:

We have a Cisco Call manager servicing our desk phones with 1 extension range (this is the primary extension), many people have lync clients in a 2nd extension range.   I have configured Call manager to simultaneously ring the lync extension when a call comes into the desk phone.

When a call comes in, both desk and lync ring.   If we pick up from the desk, the lync client sends out a missed call notification.    If we pick up from lync, the desk phone does NOT send out this notification.

So what I need is a method to tell the lync client NOT to send out these messages, yet leave this notification turned on so that messages do go out on a true missed call at the desk phone.

Can this be done?

Well for Lync this is not a Simring event! So it cannot know that Cisco does this thing.

You could disable UM integration from Lync then this will not happen...

It is actually Exchange UM that is sending out this notification, not Lync. Does Call Manager use Exchange for voicemail?

You can disable the missed call notification globally in the Exchange UM Mailbox Policy.

Yes, That  is correct.  I could disable it globally, but that is not what we are after.   We do use Exchange for Voicemail and for missed call notifications for the company when calls are missed from the desk phone.

From what I read and what I am hearing here, there seems to be no method to selectively pick what end points would 'matter' when sending out missed call notifications...    It seems to be an 'all or nothing' type of global config.

Are users who are not configured for sym-ring from Call Manager to Lync getting the missed call notifications when missing a Cisco call?

Of the users who are configured for sym-ring, how does their Exchange UM mailbox configuration differ from users who are configured for Call Manager only?

Did you configure Lync/Exchange integration? If so, you may want to disable this since it seems like you are trying to use Call Manager as the primary voice platform. Disabling the Lync/Exchange integration would prevent missed Lync calls from sending notifications but would not block Call Manager from doing so. The disadvantage would be that a Lync only user could not be UM enabled, all forwarding to voicemail would have to be done on the Cisco side.

Yes they are.

There should be no difference.  But that's the real question here.    I found 1 user with sim ring who does not get the this symptom.    There has to be some setting that controls this on a per client basis.    Its very odd.

We do use Lync/Exchange integration, and that has to stay.

Because you are using Exchange UM for both voice platforms, you cannot control missed call notifications on a per platform basis.

When users are enabled for UM, a Mailbox Policy is applied which globally controls missed call notification for that user.

One thing you might try is to remove SIP URI from EUM address list for Call Manager users who do not want to receive Lync notifications. This would break Lync/Exchange integration for specific users since Lync uses SIP URI EUM address to match call/notification to mailbox.

Here's another little discovery.

It seems there is a key difference in when a missed call notification comes through.

With a CUCM desk phone, a missed call notification only happens when a call is sent through to Exchange Voicemail.   If we get a ring and hangup before VM, no email is sent.

With Lync, Any ring to no answer (voicemail or not) generates a notification.

Since the sim-ring is setup from the CUCM, when a call that sim-rings lync, is picked up from lync, the Cisco desk phone never goes to voicemail and thus never sends the notification.      Very logical once understood.

So the question becomes, can we force Lync/exchange not to send notifications unless the calls hit VM?

Not unless Lync users are configured with a different UM Mailbox policy that is has missed call notification disabled.

However, since Call Manager is never sending missed call notifications, why not just disable missed call notifications globally anyways? Users would still get voicemail messages via e-mail.

I thought of that too, however I have been instructed to notify users when they get a call that does not leave a voicemail.   Hence the need for the notification as opposed to just the email with message attached.

I think your only options are:

Configure Lync users with a different UM Mailbox policy that has missed call notification disabled.

Remove the SIP URI from EUM address list for Call Manager users who do not want to receive Lync notifications. This would break Lync/Exchange integration for specific users since Lync/Exchange uses SIP URI EUM address to match call/notification to mailbox.

I found a solution that works for us.

In Lync client, use TOOLS - OPTIONS- PERSONAL - clear the entry for "Save Call logs in my email conversation history folder"         This will "turn off" the missed call notifications from the Lync side while retaining them on the CUCM phone side.      And no one will miss that feature anyway.

Would using an Outlook rule to delete the missed calls work for you? That is what I use to keep my inbox clear of these messages.

I had the same problem as MKOPK, I'm doing an AVAYA - Lync integration, and when you pick up from AVAYA the missed call notification goes to Outlook.

We were thinking of going desk by desk turning off the feature like MKOPK said, but found aout that this cmdlet did the trick:

Set-CsClientPolicy -Identity "PolicyName" -EnableCallLogAutoArchiving $False

That will turn off the setting for all the users for good.

I am also looking for a solution like this. But I am looking for a way to tell Lync, or UM not to send the massage. I looked through the SIPRE Dopc form MS, and it looks like you can send a sip message to the MEdiation sevrer in Lync, and tell it "HEy, I got it over here" and it will cancel the Missed call notification.

I will look for the seciton I was reading. I gave up, but there is something in there about missed call notifications and how to cancel them.

Ok,  i found it:

Microsoft has soe Open Protocol spec documents available that explain it.

It is called: EX-EUMR

You want to look in the section:

3.2.4.2 Call Answered Event

It basically says you can send it a SIP message and it will consider the call to be answered elsewhere, and not send the Missed call notification. We havent actually tested to see how/if it works, but should be doing so soon. If someone does test it out, please post up your results. I am very interested to see if this does it.
