Digital Rights Management Vs Bland Insecurity
MS is going to have to address its responsibilities with regards to Digital Rights Management. DRM applies to all files, from personal pictures to company documents. Ive already explain how I think future versions of Office should handle DRM - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/office2010general/thread/fcd02488-a41c-4d9f-80db-9f7f2c1789be And that the current systems are bland and insecure. Place a document on a restricted drive or in a restricted folder and you assume it is safe. It isnt. Somebody with access to that drive/folder could easily copy the file to a shared drive/folder. And if the file is password protected, well once a password is in the public domain it isnt safe and secure, anybody can get hold of it. The O/S has a role to play in DRM, namely accurately identifying the user, notifying the originator if illegal access is attempted and possibly interacting with the files inbuilt security. DRM doesnt just apply to music and video files, it applies to every single file produced by everybody and in this day and age I expect a better form of protection for work that I produce.
