Difficulty running Disk Defragmenter on XP Professional
The defragmenter analyzes up to 80% of my C drive, then offers the following message: "Defragmentation of (C:) has been aborted due to inconsistencies that were detected in the filesystem. Please run CHKDSK or or SCANDISK on (C:) to repair these inconsistencies, then run Disk Defragmenter again." I follow the instructions and yet have no success. What should I try now? Thanks in advance for any assistance you may offer. 1 person needs an answerI do too

Hello friend,If I were you, I'd go to My Computer, Right Click, Properties, Tools, Error Checking, Select Both of the Boxes, and hit start. You may have the option of doing this error checking on your next restart, if so, click ok and restart your computer, and let the computer do it's thing. This should do the trick, and by checking those two boxes, you'll enable the computer to fix whatever is wrong with your computer. In addition, there is a piece of software called "SmartDefrag" by Iobit, available for free download from CNET Downloads, that does the same thing as Windows Defragmenter, but it has a friendlier user interface. It doesn't do anything more or less, but it is a handy program. You might want to look into using this.I hope this helps you.-In Jesus Name,CarsonP.S. I have a little Scottish ancestry! :)

Hi Carson, Thank you for your kind and helpful advice. I followed your instructions--except that I had to click on the C: Drive icon in Control Panel to get to Error Checking--and everything is now in order. I will keep the "SmartDefrag" option in mind should I ever need it. I'm an American of Scottish ancestry who's glad to have had some assistance from a Georgia "Techie." I appreciate the time you devoted to answering me. You're a...peach! Regards, SF
