Difficulty in accessing files on a networked machine
Hi There,I have 3 computers all running XP SP3 on a common network along with a networked printer.Generally everything networks well, except for one recent problem computer which can print and access files on other machines, but other machines can't access files on the problem machine. Also scanned documents cannot be delivered to the problem machine but can to the other machines. This problem machine is my main machine. The shared folders on the problem machine are shared and the option to modify the files is ticked. So, can anyone hlep me please? Thanks in advanceCheers1 person needs an answerI do too

You haven’t said if you get an error message or the files just don’t appear. Can you browse to the shared folders by typing \\computer name\shared folder name into the Address bar of an Explorer window?Alternatively, it could be that the shortcut(s) has been deleted from the display. Go to My Network Places and in the left pane click View workgroup computers. If the computer is there, are the folders showing when it is expanded? If so, open another instance of My Network Places and drag the missing shortcut(s) to it.

Thanks getting back to me.I can see the problem computer from other machines when I explore the Entire Network and then all of it's shared folders. However, when I try and open one of the folders I get the following error message:".......is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permisions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command."I have just found out tonight that this also happens when I try and search the network path to the shared folders from within the same problem machine. Same error message. When I try and send a scan to the problem machine the printer just says "no response"Cheers

1. Are you running Norton? If so, temporarily turn it off.2. Also, there are plenty of Google hits suggesting it could be a stack size issue, herehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/177078

Thanks for that.No I got rid of Notron on my machines years ago and hate the intrusive stuff.I've already checked the Stack size and changed it to a value of 20 but no luck there either.Any other thoughts please? Thanks

Could the issue be malware-related?Have all the machines behaved properly in the past?Do you have different AV and/or firewalls on the machines? You could set up the sharing from scratch.

Starting from scratch, remove the share and then create it, as follows:STOP SHARINGRight-click the folder > Sharing and Security and remove the tick from ’Share this folder……..‘.SHARE FOLDERRight-click the folder > Sharing and Security > Sharing Tab > and put a check mark in Share this folder on the network and optionally, Allow Network users to change my files. Type in a Share Name > Apply > OK. A little hand should appear on the icons of the folders that are shared. Alternatively, drag the folders you want to share to the Shared Documents folder. In XP Professional you may have to turn off Simple File Sharing in Folder Options > View Tab > Advanced Settings at the end.GENERALWindows firewall (in Control Panel) is normally set to allow file and printer sharing but if you have a third-party firewall it needs to allow access to the networked computers, usually by adding their IP addresses. Don’t disable the Windows firewall if it’s the only one you’re running. To see or copy files, click Start > My Network Places and the computers/folders/files will appear.

I have done a full malware and virus check and all is clear. This machine has been ok in the past but a year ago it had a similar problem and I got over it by repairing windows which I don't really want to go through again.I have removed the firewall also but with no luck. So, how do I set up the file sharing from scratch please? Thanks
