Different archive policy for different user groups

The company I work for is made up of several different business, each of which has its own regulatory needs in terms of retaining and archiving IM communication.  Is it possible to granularly turn on/off archiving for select groups of users?  Can this be done through GPO?

An archiving policy can be applied to a user or group . This Technet article discusses how to do this through the GUI, it can also be done from Powershell. A Powershell script could get all users in an OU and apply an archiving policy.

Where you able to configure this setup? If so how did you accomplish it. I am looking at the same thing, i see you can make multiple Policies but the Archive configuration controls the retention and i cannot soo how to create more then global and site, even then i dont see how you can assign them to a policy.
