Dialup VPN works in XP but not in Windows 7. Getting Error 734 The PPP Link control protocol was terminated. PLEASE help
I'm hoping someone can help. I am able to connect via dialup VPN on my XP laptop, which is sitting next to my new Windows 7 laptop. I know I have the correct password, as I can get in on the XP machine. I've matched as many parms as possible between the XP machine and the Windows 7 machine. I've spent 20+ hours searching the web for a solution. Under Options, I have tried checking/unchecking Include Windows Log On Domain (it is checked on the XP machine). Under PPP settings, negotiate multilink is unchecked. Under Security, Data Encrytpion I have tried NO and Optional (XP is set to optional). Under Allow These Protocols, I have tried every combination of PAP, CHAP, and CHAP2 (6 different ways of having boxes checked and unchecked) On the dialer, I turned on logging, and receive the following message: <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"Cambria Math"; panose-1:2 4 5 3 5 4 6 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:roman; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-1610611985 1107304683 0 0 415 0;} @font-face {font-family:Calibri; panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4; mso-font-charset:0; mso-generic-font-family:swiss; mso-font-pitch:variable; mso-font-signature:-520092929 1073786111 9 0 415 0;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-unhide:no; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; margin-top:0in; margin-right:0in; margin-bottom:10.0pt; margin-left:0in; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} .MsoChpDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; mso-default-props:yes; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} .MsoPapDefault {mso-style-type:export-only; margin-bottom:10.0pt; line-height:115%;} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.0in 1.0in 1.0in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> Event Type: Error Event Source: RasMan Event Category: None Event ID: 20276 Date: 12/10/2009 Time: 9:50:56 AM User: N/A Computer: XPS Description: : The connection attempt failed on port: COM3 because of the authentication protocol selected. The trouble shooting will need be started at the other end, you need to know what THEY are looking for. They should be able to view the logs and give you more info / help

The problem is they don't know anything on their end. They had this connection set up years ago for them, and all of their PCs are on XP. There is no one at their location who has any network knowledge. I was hoping someone who was able to VPN with XP but is unable to do so with Vista or Windows 7 would have an answer. I tried searching the internet for days, tried all the easy solutions like turning off CHAP, etc, but those didn't work.

Still hoping someone out there knows why a dialup VPN would work under XP but not Vista or Win 7...

I have the same problem trying to dial in to my personal Draytek VPN router. It works from my XP machine, but not on my Windows 7 machine. The settings are very simple and straight forward: username, password, IP Address. Not sure where it can go wrong.Ernst

Hi Ed,I just got mine working! Whoohaaa! In the tab "Security" I forced the "Type of VPN" to "Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)". If I don't do this and leave it on automatic, it will try to make a connection through L2TP Protocol and fails.Hope this helps!Regards,Ernst

Hi, May I know more information about your VPN server; is it a Windows Based server? At this time, please ensure that your VPN server has MS-CHAP v2 enabled. The MS-CHAP version 1 authentication protocol has been deprecated in Windows VistaThanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
