Dial-Up Problems
Vista Home Premium 32 bit; Celeron 2.8; IE-7: Windows Mail; Avast AVAm having a problem with dial-up. In the dial-up Connect window, I check "Save Username and password" and set it to "Anyone who uses this computer", and connect successfully. But the next time I try to connect, the checkbox is cleared and I have to reset it.(Usual UAC permission box pops up)If I don'treset, the connection either fails with Error 691 on "Verifying Username and password", or if it connects, it randomlly disconnects while trying to read mail or surfing web. (In this case, Network and Sharing Center reverts to "Local Only" for Internet Connection). I have tried all the obvious options with no success. This problem just surfaced a few weeks ago; I suspect it may have been caused by one of the Updates.Am I missing something in the options or is a registry hack needed? One other thing: In properties, both IPv4 and IPv6 are installed. Could this problem be related to IPv6?

Have you tried doing a system restore back to a restore point createdjust before the problem appeared?

OK, I seem to have solved my problem by checking "Connect Automatically" in the inital dialup window. Vista remembers this setting, bypasses the second dialup window and connects without any of the problems outlined below. Like others, I have always been wary of allowing programs to connect to the internet automatically, but in this case it seems to be the only way. Any ideas as to why Vista will remember the settings in one case and not the other?

I had a customer with almost exactly the same problem. When she would connect all was fine but when she would disconnect and reconnect she would get a 691 error (username and/or password was invalid on the domain After deleting the connection and recreating it she could connect but if she disconnected and reconnected the error would come back. I also had her not delete the connection but to remove the username and password from the connection and type it back in after hitting the delete key a few times at the end of the username and password. She would connect fine once again and then disconnect and yep you guessed it error 691. I don't know why but I was checking her connection properties and had her disable the IPv6 protocol in the connection that previously worked and then stopped working. Had her replace the username and password again and again hitting delete several times at the end of the username and password. Had her connect then disconnect and all worked fine. To me it seemed like Vista was adding characters to either the username or password and I have been trying to find out why and even if that was the case. That is how I found this thread. I'm still searching for answers but I hope this helps you a litttle.

Thanks for the reply. I did disable IPv6 but it did not help. Also, another user suggested disabling the QoS Packet Scheduler, but when I did this the problem with random disconnects got worse. Right now I am running IPv4 and the Packet Scheduler only. As I stated in a previous message, enabling "Connect Automatically" in the first dialup window (which bypasses the second window) allows me to connect with no problems. Ican't help thinking that theproblem might have something to do with UAC in that it will not retain the"Anyonewho uses this computer" setting. Your suggestion that Vista was adding characters to the UserName and/or password is interesting...A couple times after receiving 691, I did retype the password and it fixed that error, so you might have something there. But anyway, now I am connecting automatically and everything appearsOK.
