Devistatingly slow internet speeds
About two weeks ago, my landlord had changed the router that we use to a WRT400N. My internet at that time had established a connection, but I couldn't load up any websites. I think it was called a winsock error or something, but after getting everything resolved, I had a very, very slow internet connection. I have no idea if that problem could have contributed to my current connection speed, so I figured I should throw it out there. I'm also connected through an ethernet cable, and using the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home. My firewall is totally disabled and there is zero spyware/viruses on my computer. The speed of the connection used to be around 15-20 Mbit/s download and 2 Mbit/s upload, but is now around 2.5 Mbit/s download and the same exact upload. At random times during the day(like right now, which is 1:00 AM where I live), the download speed will drop to around .2-.4 Mbit/s accompanied with a outrageously high ping. My first thought was that the service plan had changed, but I wasn't told anything about it and a few days ago after returning back to my apartment from a vacation, the speed at jumped to ~10 Mbit/s, which was the highest I had seen it in a while. However, shortly afterwords it dropped back down to 2.5 Mbit/s. My second suspicion was that I was being throttled through the router, but since the password had been left on default for a few days I was able to poke around and didn't see anything of the sort. I would have updated the firmware while I was there, but the only "update" out for the router currently is the same firmware that the thing came with. The router now also has a new password, so it makes solving this problem even more difficult. The only other potential problem I could think of outside of my computer that could attribute to the slowdown, was the ethernet cable that runs outdoors. It's well over a year old and has taken its fair beating from the elements. I'm not really an expert on this stuff, so I have no clue if a damaged cable could result in choppier internet or resulting in the internet just not working at all. I've tried applying a couple of fixes to my computer, but nothing seems to be doing the trick. So far: -Disabled Ipv6 -Enabling autotuning in the registry -Ran a few commands in an elevated command prompt netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled I'd appreciate any help with this, and will try to provide any necessary information ASAP.

Hi Kevin, Is there another user experiencing the same problems? Is the signal strength maximum? Linksys suggests using the troubleshooter to repair the network connection. http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WRT400N Right side of screen. Have you tried ipconfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns? Check for a newer driver for your wireless adapter. ( I know, but I had to offer it)

Oooh, I just found something very interesting. Since I didn't have enough information / access to any other computers on the network to answer your first question, I decided to load up my laptop and plug my ethernet cable into it. The speed tests went back to a nice big 15.65 Mbit/s! I tried the repair tool, and the ipconfig commands but neither of those worked. I have a wireless adapter, but I'm not sure the thing even functional. However, the drivers do seem to be up to date. Edit/Answer : Wow, seems like I just figured out what my problem was! The internet issue I had touched upon briefly in my first post had me messing around with a bunch of settings on my ethernet card. I had my speed/duplex settings set to 100 Mb Full Duplex, but once I switched it over to 100 Mb half duplex, i was getting the full force of my connection again. Thanks so much for the help!
