Desktop Unresponsive, Programs Not Working, Changes Not Saving
Hi, I've been running low on memory lately, and recently freed some up by deleting some old programs - nothing essential, I assure you. Basic stuff, really, and this is the only change I've made to the computer recently. Now, when I start up my Windows XP, it has all kinds of problems: 1. When I clicked my account to log in, the load screen took an abnormally long time to process. The menu just sat there, telling me it was logging me in for about five whole minutes. It looked like the computer was frozen, but it wasn't. Now, everything runs very slowly. Surfing the internet is basically impossible, because it takes forever. I'm stuck looking for answers on my family's Mac right now. 2. When I finally logged in, my desktop picture had been reset to plain blue, and all of my desktop icons had been removed. I found them in my Desktop folder, but this did not fix the problem. Some of them, including Firefox and the Trash Can, are completely unresponsive. The ones that do open usually give me some kind of error message and then close. The only way I can delete things now is to permanently delete them, as the trash will not accept them. 3. After restoring all icons to my desktop, they refuse to go where I put them. Every time I start the computer now, the icons always appear on the left-hand side, in a vertical row. Basically, every change I try to make to my computer settings - including IE - to fix this problem DOES NOT SAVE. Restarting or turning off the computer reverts everything back to the way it was. 4. I get the following message when I try to download new programs, including Firefox: "Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable, or cannot be found." 5. I have a flashing "No Input Signal" box on my screen while the computer is sleeping. None of this has ever been a problem, and this morning, they all appeared out of nowhere. I don't understand what is causing the problem, and why none of these changes are making a difference. How am I supposed to fix it if I can't make any setting changes work? Thanks. 1 person needs an answerI do too

About how much memory do you have left. If you use all the memory on your hard drive you will shut your computer down and it will not start-up unless you have another system to delete things off your old hard drive. Also I would run a very indepth Virus scan on your computer if you haven't I have had issue in the past about duplicating file Virus. It shut my laptop down due to no hard drive space. Good Luck! Please rate me up if you find my post helpful. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for the reply! I'm not sure how much memory I have left. How much should I have? The trouble is, I might not be able to check for you. I keep getting prompted with a message, in a box titled "C:\WINDOWS\system32\runddl32.exe", that says, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." It started popping up when I tried to access the properties on programs like IE, but now I get it when I, the administrator, try to view things like the control panel. I already did two Norton scans - one full, one quick - one of which was done on Safe Mode. I ran Spybot, as well, and all three scans didn't show any threats whatsoever. That's why I'm so confused. These seem like problems that only arise if you have a virus, yet my computer says it's virus-free. I've tried downloading recommended programs like HijackThis, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware andSmitFraudFix, but IE won't let me. If I can't download those helpful programs, how can I fix the problem?

If you have your WinXP disc throw that in and try to run the fix Windows Program on there and see if that utility will find the fix for you. Please rate me up if you find my post helpful. Thank you!
