Desktop Icons Disappearing - with folder redirection enabled
I have a problem with several windows 7 workstations, they are running on a Windows 2003 DC. The users have roaming profiles and desktop / my documents redirected to a network share.Offline files has been disabled as the workstations are desktop PC's and offline files is not required.Intermittantly 2-3 times a day some users will lose all their desktop icons, if they click on the desktop and press F5 orright click and refresh, they all appear again.I checked the eventlogs and some of the computers were reporting network issues with loss of connection. This turned out to be faulty cabling and this has been replaced but the users are still experiencing this disappearing act. No when this happens I have no errors at all in the eventlogs on the client machines or the DC or File server.Anybody else had this problem or any ideas on how to fix it?

Pretty sure, the network cabling has been swapped out from machine to switch and the user is on the same switch as other users.

Hi,Other than network issue, I assume that this can be related to instable IconCache or corrupted IconCache. Have you tried to rebuild the IconCache?Rebuild the IconCache==============1. Click Start, and open Computer.2. On the Tool bar, click Organize and choose Folder and Search Options. 3. Click the View tab, and check to select the Show hidden files and folders option, and click OK.4. Then, enter the following directory:%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local5. Find the IconCache.db file, and rename it as IconCache.db.old.6. Close the window, and restart the computer.Best RegardsDale

I am having the same problem exactly with desktop redirection except on windows xp pro fully patched. I have narrowed it down to it disapearing after going into sleep mode or standby. Do you think deleting the icon cache will fix it on windows xp? David

Hi, I also found that if you redirect application data it can cause My Documents and Desktop to have all files dissappear, hitting F5 brings everything back. Once application data was removed from the Group Policy, My Documents and Desktop stopped having files disappear. Thanks, FlipSideZN
