Deny acess to files and other issues
Hi, i have a very big problem with my w7 x64 version - ptbr. My cpu has a C: drive where i install programs and E: and F: drive to save files and backup them. This OS was working very well until i try to connect my cpu to a homegroup network. When i began to create a home group we need to make choices about sharing folders, documents, music and videos etc. During the homegroup creation i let my folders shared but after i decide to not share E: drive. When i do this, the system restricted my own files acess to programs like money 2008 or office 2003. When i try to open files, it show a message "money cant open this file because file are written protect or cryptographed" or "excel cant open "....". "file can be read only or cryptographed". When i try to create a new file on excel, it open a new doc but dont allow "save" or "save as" because the program dont have acess to drives E: and F:.I try to share my file again, but all attemptive that i try to do this have noeffectivity. I try to change security issues on E: drive properties and or change security to a single file. The system turn back a message like "change cant be done. Acess denied to E: drive"Looking at file by explorer sometime i can see a "key" in file icon or sometimes not. I try to make change innetwork sharing properties under safe mode but it dont have effectivity. When i try to make changes in a folder security properties under advanced sharingwizard it shows that permissions are signed correctly but itsn't enough to enable file acess and saving. In the same file propertie wizard under security, it shows a "administrator" icon with a "x" marked icon and show the same icon under security permissions as unknown user (administrator). On the other hand, i try to open the same files (in the E: drive)under xpmode and office 2003 and it works very well. I can open, make changes and save without any system message.I tryed to turn back system to a restoration point before the changing but dont make change in this problem.I read many solutions to this problem under windows 7 security and try some solutions but dont solve the problem.Well, could someone explain what are happenning here and givea solution.att Gilberto

Hi Gilberto, Windows 7 appears to have some bugs involving HomeGroup and changing of shares. Here's one I encountered (fourth post in the thread) where, suddenly, no user had permissions for the C:\ object. It was manually correctible by respecifying ownership of the object: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/14042180-3526-45a8-9789-16ebe40e339dDetails for your situation will likely be somewhat different since you have more than one shared object. I recommend you check the permissions and ownership for each object giving you trouble. Also, user "dwolters" (second post in the thread) gave a link to a W7 hotfix. I looked at it but didn't try it because, first, I tried the manual correction which worked. You may want to try the hotfix (I am not sure it is applicable). Regards, and luck! tullik

HiScott, about your questions. Yes i try to run excel as administrator(my login name has administrator properties). I try under safe mode andexcel cant open file, too.Excel cant save different names cant"save as" to because it dont have access to E: drive.Aboutthe system properties: under E: drive -> right click > properties tab > security tab > "system" dont appear, but in advanced > look up> add "system" it shows "change permissions"and "total control" is unchecked.Att. Hi Scott, i try to implement changes following your question about system properties. i carefully try to give to "administrator", "administrators", "system" total control to make changes to files or drive. Well, differents things happen: i can access some files in drives like homebanking program, text doc, or video and music, but not in files associated to office 2003. None file (doc, xls) can be open. Under xpmode, office 2003 can open, edit and save files in same E: and F: drive.I try editing system properties, administrator and administrator properties under each file, each folder, each drive relationed but no changes have effectivity. At each attemptive to open office's file it show message: word cant open file > it change to offer to open file as only read when it shows: "error under word to open file". "try this suggestions "verify permissions for a file or drive", "verify memory ammount", "try to reppair text...".I have a question: wich command in the system can prevent access to my own office file. 2) if i format my c: drive, the restriction on E: and F: file will remain in a new installation? The security level on w7 x64 is very good. Protect doc till the owner. Thats incredible. Gilberto.

Hello Gilberto,So changing the permissions for system and administrator did cause some change to the problem? It sounds as though when you set up Homegroup networking the system made some pretty radical permission changes. Im not completely sure I understand your question, are you suggesting a fresh install of Windows 7? If so then that could very well clear this up. Was your initial installation a fresh or an upgrade? Also before totally formatting and re-installing you may want to consider an in-place upgrade. This will re-install Windows 7 RC without losing any data or programs.-Scott

Hi Scott, if you want see a desperate man, see me now. I formatted my c: drive, and install a fresh version of w7 x64, but the problem still go on on my computer. It turn back messages showing a denied access to my E: F: drives. To worsen, now untill xpmode show the same message. About the permissions changing for system and administrator, it can it shows a message that the changes are done but the acess is denied under excel or word. In xpmode it shows a message like "a dialog box is open" and deny acess to the file. Man, i very very worried and upset with this problem. If i could, i'm going back to my usefull windows xp, but i cant cause my acess to my files are denied under two os. I dont know what i will do. Something must be done to get back my ownership on my files and backup hd's. But i dont know what. If you need acess my cpu to see what is happening, please make contact. Best regards Gilberto.

Hello Gilberto,The problem may be as simple as taking ownership of all the files and folders manually. There are some good suggestions in this post.-Scott

Hi Scott, thank you and "asylum reaserch" that show theway to solvethe problem.Really the problem was about take ownership of all the files and drives. As i had reinstall w7 x64 i m not sure if the owership change made by formatting under ntfs was the problem or the problem came with the ancient system and take ownership solved the problem. Well, my system return 80% to the normallity cause in despite of i had take ownership about all my drives each file folder must be change to my ownership. About take ownership: a very important information is that take ownership is not just add your admin name in security advanced tab but most is check the button "replace the permissions from this object to the permissions inherited from this object" (or some like this " my pt-br translate is poor about technicals therms").The context help fortunetelly have importants informations about how take ownership and everyone that have problem like this must read them.Just it.Thanks to you.

I had the exact same problem - on a 32 bit system after trying to share with another Win7 machine. I made myself owner again, and again, and again, folder by folder and then changed permissions to everything for everyone and for me, folder by folder, file by file. It wouldn't let me just take control of the entire drive. I finally got tired. Finally I took control of and permitted myself for those files I knew had changed since this snaffu. I copied those files to an external drive and thence to my backup computer. Fortunately I'm a backup nut so there weren't too many files involved. How I lost ownership and permissions for this drive remains a mystery, since I never told Win7 to change ownership, only to share the folders in the drive. Finally: I went to disc management in the control panel and deleted the problematical partition. I then recreated, and quick reformatted the partition. I then mapped the mirror drive from my backup computer (which runs WinX Prof.) and copied ALL 60GB of the files back onto the Win7 computer. Please, all this security is nice, but for heaven's sake if there is only ONE user ID on a system, maybe it should occur to Windows that that person is the owner, of everything. Meanwhile I won't try to share between Win7 machines again unless I first disconnect, by pulling the cable, the drive containing my user files. I've been sharing files on a network and granting permissions etc. since NT3. This is the first time I had to re-partition a drive to get it back!

Hi Leo854,i really understand your feelings about this problem. W7 x64, at first sight, was stable, cool, etc, but this bug about security is unaceptable to me. Why became ownership so complicated. I just want to connect to another network with security. Maybe so powerfull fine tunning about security and ownership is interisting to geeks, but not to me. And go back an error (if it occured) should be possible. If i have to make a restoration point for each change i made in the system, this system is not to me. Well, i understand in your email that you solve your problem, right?. I partially solved my problem, cause can get access again, and now i can make a backup, but the problems about ownership is not on the end. I cant understand why, when i order to system to change ownership to my account, it make a change, give access but change the icon in the explorer to a keyed icon. I dont know if this icon mean that the file is blocked to another user ( as i suspect) cause i dont have courage to try share my files again. Sometimes it change a keyed icon to my folder, other times (when you try to change the security permissions) it change the icon to files and turn back the folder to normal icon. I have just one sure. Here, w7 x64 have a big bug to solve. Best regards.Gilberto

DEfinitely a big bug that only shows it head when playing with the Homegroup disaster. A temporary workaround is reboot into safe mode (f8), right click on each drive you want access to, select properties. Inside there select the security tab, and edit the permissions of the USER account. basically give them full control and you are back in business. This will give you access to your drives and especially the windows directory again.
