Hello! This is Rod in SF Area XP Home OE6.I just solved the problem as a suggestion of a technical support person at COMCAST.COM who recommended compacting the "Delete" folder. It worked. Everything is just fine now. Goodby everyone! Rod

Shawn...I get bumped entirely off of OE6 when I attempt to open and/or delete random msgs (seems to be spam, but not all spam makes this happen). I get mail thru bellsouth.net Any ideas? Thanks!

Is this a POP3 account? Start by working offline, (File | Work Offline). Can you either move good messages, or delete junk messages? If you can secure all your good e-mail in user created folders, then do the following:Move any messages you want to save out of Deleted Items, Sent Items and the Inbox to folders that you create and then close OE and delete the dbx files for these three folders. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the Deleted Items.dbx, Sent Items.dbx and Inbox.dbx files and delete them. New files will be created automatically when you open OE. Compact all folders as described below. To help prevent this in the future: Do not archive mail in the Inbox or Sent Items. Create your own user defined folders and move the messages you wish to save to them. Empty Deleted Items folder daily. Although dbx files have a theoretical capacity of 2GB, I recommend about a 300MB max for less chance of corruption. Information about the maximum file size of the .dbx files that are used by Outlook Express:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903095 After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 And backup often. This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is written in red. That is referring to a different program. Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB):http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail]

Bruce...yes, POP3. These steps look helpful...I'll try them, but why are some spam messages so toxic? (closing OE as soon as I click on them?) I would try blocking them, but can't stay on OE when I "choose" them. thank you!

You may already have Malware on your machine. Download and run this freeware tool.Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.40http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html Blocked Senders is a waste of time since spammers are constantly changing their addresses. You might want to try "filtering in" your mail.Start with the Address Book only rule and as you get messages you want from people not in your Address Book, (E-mail from businesses, bills, your ISP, etc.), you can add them to the rule. Tools | Message Rules | Mail | New. Box 1 - Where the From line contains people {check it} Box 2 - Check: Delete it & Stop processing more rules if you want messages not in the Address Book to go to Deleted Items, or you can create a Junk folder and direct them there. You can choose Delete it from server, but be careful as you will never have any messages downloaded to any folder if you choose this option. Sending them to a junk folder is safer. Box 3 - Click on the blue words Contains People Click on the first address to highlight it. Scroll down to the end and hold down the Shift key while you click on the last address. This will highlight them all. Right click on them and click on From in the menu that appears. Now click Options and Choose: Message *does not contain* the people below in the top Options box, and choose: Message matches any one of the people below in the bottom Options box. OK your way out of the new rule. Now, only addresses you entered will be downloaded to your Inbox. You will not see any other e-mail. Don't forget, if you add someone to your Address Book, you will have to add them to the rule. It will not be added automatically. Be sure to see these links for more options.
