Delete files on C drive to save space
My computer have some files in C drive, the file name is a random series of numbers. I have SQL server developer edition installed on my computer.I guess it is some updates for that. I would like to delete it to save some space but it says you require permission from System to make changes to this folder or file, even I am the administrator of the box. Please see attachment, one is the folders, the other is when I open the parent folder that shows a list of subfolders. What are those files/folders? Is there a way to delete them? Thnks SQLFriend Just found out no way to do attachment, so the folder name is like e42abbc6eb16e0d5487c8ad105, the subfolders it has hot fixas, 1033, hotfixtdts, hotfixns, hotfixrs, hotfixsql.....

"1033" is the name used to indicate the English language, the other folders could be specific to some updates according to the SQL Server installation and features. Are these folders located in the root directory of the C: drive? You could try moving a folder into the Recycle Bin one by one and check if everything works fine before permanently remove them. It is in the root direcoty C: drive. And I tried to delete the child folder, and even the file in the child folder, it still gives the message that requires system permission. ThanksSQLFriend

Maybe the folders are locked by the System account and used by some process that runs under that account: leave the folders where they are. Bye.Luigi Bruno

Open an Administrative Command prompt (right-click, Run As Administrator). From there, you should be able to delete the files/folders as necessary. I recommend you first move them to a temp location to just make sure that all is good. Once you are sure, then you can safely remove the files/folders.

Add Take Ownership to the explorer right click menu as described here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/ Then right click on the folder you wish to delete and click on Take Ownership. You should now be able to delete the folder. As suggested earlier, move the file to a temp folder first to be sure deleting it causes no adverse effects. Jerry
