Delete Service
I made the huge mistake of actually deleting Virtual Device Service (vds) from services.msc. I found vds still in the registry under local machine. But I do not know how to reestablish this service back in the manager. I have tried to reinstall windows, but this cannot be done without this service being available to use. 1. Is there some way to reestablish this service from within the registry, or some place else? 2. Is there a default service.msc that can replace existing service.msc, that contains all the working services? Lara

Have you run System Restore to a point before you deleted the service? Does Search find vds.exe on your hard drive? If so, you can copy it to the location shown in the registry, and it may then work again for you. To answer #2, services.msc is just the console interface to all of the services installed. It's not where they actually exist. SC Tom

Tom, without vds a restore point fails. It seems this vds is vital to many operations within Windows. vds.exe does show up in a search on the hard drive. However, nothing happens when it is clicked. On a side note. I tried to use dos to format the hard drive. I ran the cmd as an administrator. However, Access was denied me. The command to format the HD did not go through.Lara

I should have done my homework. VDS is Virtual Disk Service, not Device. I have it on my Win7HP 32-bit, but it's set to manual, and is not running. It's not required for SR, or at least it isn't on my system. Are you sure that's what you deleted? Sounds like it may have been something else. SC Tom

Lara How did you do the 'deletion'? - I ask because it makes a big difference as to how best to fix it. Did you simply delete the entry in the registry, or what? In Windows 7 Pro 64Bit, I have Virtual Disk in Serices, default setting Manual - not running. In Programs & Features->Turn Windows Features on or off, will selecting Windows Virtual PC setting reinstate what you are missing? I only got into VM by setting up XP as one can do in Pro plus versions of Windows.

Furthermore: In Device Manager, under View Tab, select Show Hidden. I see two Generic Storage Volumes and six Volume Shadows. Here, under Action Tab, scan for Harware Changes may do something if you see nothing. You could try Disk Cleanup and Check Drive for errors, via right-click of C: Drive->Properties.

Virtual Disk Service has almost nothing to do with Virtual PC or XP Mode. the VDS is what allows things like spanned volumes, and much elseNoel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Hi, At this situation, I suggest performing SFC to test issue. If VDS still cannot be fixed, please perform In-place Upgrade. For reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 In addition, you can reinstall the system to fix this issueKim Zhou TechNet Community Support

Can you go to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\vds Can you right-click on that registry key and select "Export" and save as a .reg file. Then right-click the resulting .reg file and select "Edit". Can you then copy and paste the contents of the .reg file to a post in this thread?
