Defragmenting stalls and doesn't complete
The windows 7 defragmenter often stalls out and doesn't complete defragmenting my 2 TB external drive. Any tips? Is this too big a drive to defragment?

Review the Event Viewer for an event that triggers the stall. Click Start=>type Event in the aearch box and select the event viewer from the results. Let it populate and check in the adminstrative summary for critical and error events. If, none, just poke around and look for anything related to the disk defragmenter or the drive. Also, is the external enclosure on it's own power supply? It is a 3.5" drive, correct? Just using the usb power may be a stress depending on the number devices that you have connected.

Hi, I would like to know if you received any error message or just the process stuck at one stage? Did the issue occur before? How about other hard drives? I suggest referring to the following method to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Delete unneeded files and programs till you have more than 20% free space. 2. Run chkdsk /f /r command with an elevated privilege. 3. Try to scan the computer with your security software. 4. Please perform a Clean Boot and don't open other programs. 5. If the built-in defragmenter is corrupted, the most efficient way is perform the in-place upgrade to repair the function Best Regards, Niki Please remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
