Defrag runs very fast and doesn't do a good job - analysis after defrag = "volume needs defrag run" XP HOME ED - any help out there please ?
I'm using windows XP HOME ED on my laptop and try to keep everything up to date . Recently I went to defrag and it went very quickly through the process and didn't seem to do a very good job. I went back through the analysis and it told me the volume needed to be defraged. I've never had this problem and I know how a "normal" defrag operation goes from running them over time on this laptop. I can run the defrag over and over but it just doesn't clean up the files like it should. The program appears to be doing something , going through my drive and moving some files but only a few. It doesn't hang or give an error message , it just isn't doing a complete job. Any help would be very welcome ---- Thank you1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi , Yes I ran the check disc before I tried to defrag , it didn't come up with any problems. I usually run that and the clean up utilitiy to get rid of any old files or too many restore points before hand etc. Everything seems to work fine until I defrag - I wonder if the hard drive is going bad and it is causing the problem ? I'm not an expert by any means so I'm just guessing - I just know how to keep up with maintenance , I've never had this happen before. Thanks for the suggestion -

I haven't - But I will try that , do I just put it into safe mode when it boots up and go along as I normally would ? I didn't go to the link you sent yet - I have to go out for a while , when I get back I'll see what I can do. - Thank you very much for your help , I appreciate that. It's not a crisis but I like for everything to work the way it is suppose to , I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from. If I keep up with the maintenance hopefully I won't have any major problems or at least the computer will run the way it is made to work , anyhow ! that's the plan ! Thanks again ---
